In all seriousness, this is accurate.

For better or for worse, self-sufficiency is/was one of the highest virtues among Gen-Xers.

Very different from younger generations, in my experience.

Agree.

I'm an older part of the Millennial cohort, but grew up in poverty out in the boonies (lagged significantly behind on the tech adoption curve). I often find that I can relate better to Gen-Xers than to other Millennials.

🤝

In the same boat as far as older cohort. Never really related to millennials. Friends would call my house through landlines asking for me and my parents would tell them that they "hadn't seen me in two weeks, if you do let him know to check in with us"

I DON'T DISAGREE IN GENERAL BUT THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS

I’m 50 and I still have that self sufficiency mindset to a fault.

I was making KD at home by myself at age 8 while my parents were working ++ almost all of what was mentioned and more.

Super accurate.

True… after school I could play with buddies a few farms away if my chores were done (approximately 90 mins and I ate all my dinner.) limited to 30 mins of TV (except MacGuyver) and only had 2 channels. My playtime was bikeriding, dirtbiking or Catching Chubbs in the river. Lol

When I dropped out of math in Grade 11… My dad said “Guess what…6 am the rest of the year, You’re out shovelling shit in the barn” and I did. so yea.

We’re built different.

100% Agreed!

ha. Kind words. I'm not quite so based, but being minimalistic, anti materialistic and self sufficient seemed to be a necessary stance against the world as it appeared to be.

I rate this. Especially as a mean 42 yo.

Fair assessment. I think I met my parents once or twice, not sure tbh.

I agree. After high school I went travelling and lived overseas for a few years. I learned another language, and became fully independent. I learnt a lot in that time and it's helped me get to where I am. I'm so thankful I did that.

I'm Generation X and I walked 3 km to school in the fresh air, didn't need helicopter parents to drive me there. I know how to read a map, how to use a compass and where the sun rises and I know my birds in the garden. You talk about nature, but you don't know where it is. I get to appointments on time. I can live longer without a smartphone. My neck doesn't bend forward. My eyes are still healthy. I don't have to share my entire private life with the world. My eyes are still healthy. I understand that work-life balance unfortunately doesn't work in our exiisting world! 😉
