I love my sister to death, but we live in extremely different worlds.

She genuinely thinks that TikTok is the best social media that ever existed. And she genuinely thinks that TikTok is "waking people up to the terror of the US government."

For me, it's hard for me to even respond to something like that as I sit here....on nostr....a protocol that allows for social media use cases that are not algorithm driven, actually uncensorable, And your eye movement isn't getting tracked.

Like am I wrong to think that TikTok is mostly brain rot? I know a lot of people here probably don't like the app, so asking that question here is a little bit rhetorical.

But if this is how a large portion of people view something like TikTok, then nostr has a lot of fucking work to do to get its message across.

You gotta remember nostr is basically nonexistent.

Tik tok gave a lot of younger gen information they wouldn’t get on Facebook, Instagram, Google etc. I would not say it was all brain rot

True enough.

Judging TikTok, Instagram, twitter etc by their explore pages and alogos is like judging nostr based off of primal's trending bar, which is nostr's own version of slop.

There are some genuinely funny and interesting people on TikTok, Instagram, twitter etc. Like anything tho it's a bit harder to find, won't be on the explore pages or whatnot.

I'm not saying there isn't a lot more slop on these other places tho.

We also have quite a lot of people here regurgitating trending slop off of other sites lol.

Yeah, that's an extremely fair point. I guess I get caught up in the technology a bit too much, not necessarily the content.

I never used tik tok...and Instagram, I have an account made by meta but I never go there...very rare, only when someone sends me stuff.

Some years ago I had a Microsoft phone lol not connected to Google and I was so happy

Next I had a Huawei and the same. Very happy without algos and publicity but it took some effort to do stuff. I had to search for it and do rounds about.

I am not a content creator, far from it.

I share stuff I like that I find from others. So yes, those platforms are rich in funny and also some genius stuff I like and share. It has it's value.

Sometimes I write and make some silly videos and take pictures but far from thinking that they are awesome or amazing lol.

All this to say that for me freedom comes from alignment between what we think, feel and do. This for me is actually word.

If people like algo, good, it helps sometimes to find something we lost. Kudos to that.

To each their own.

I like to search for something and full stop, without being flushed with publicity every time I go into a new site...geezz

There are lots of people who use those platforms and do not like the algos tho. They used despite the algos. And I assume they would turn them down/off if they could.

I think there can be a bit of a snobbishness on nostr, like these people on TikTok just watch 4000 videos of people dancing and love the algo. It's just not the case (for every user at least lol)

Hi yes I believe you are wrong. TikTok has opened the eyes of many Americans to the realities of their lives in America compared to other countries.

If you've never been on TikTok yourself why are you judging it so negatively? 170 million Americans on it learned about things that the other apps have suppressed. Obviously still tons of censorship but what she's telling you people are experiencing is true. And that's why they are banning it.

Give her some credit.

TikTok is great to them because it's all they know. They will love Nostr once it's ready for them.

I judge any centrally controlled platform nowadays pretty harshly. Definitely a bias I have.

Definitely but why judge the people using it?

I think the media did a really good job of painting TikTokers as idiots. That was propaganda that made it effortless for the United States to ban a social media app headquartered in America that 1/3 of all adults used!

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm getting at. I'm not judging anyone for using it. I genuinely don't give a fuck what people use. I don't use it myself, and even though the ban isn't going to affect me because I don't use the app, I am wholeheartedly against it. I don't see siloing off America from the rest of the world as a positive thing.

My confusion, I guess, comes from a technology standpoint. I'm a little bit too invested in tech. And I have a hard time seeing a centralized platform controlled by a state as genuinely beneficial. But that's just my own bias.

And I guess I'm just more confused because her view to me is an alien perspective. I'm just trying to understand why people are so attached to it.

I've been talking about this on nostr:npub1627md0lshr7hsa9z6ud8xpln2xvrszjcqv0uu5d8cjvz4f2vscnsat3aec for quite some time.

The TikTok ban is going to affect you. You're an American and your country is doing what we call our enemies fascist for doing. This is a huge deal and only the beginning. I am an Iranian refugee. Please believe me.

I'm not saying TikTok is the better alternative. I'm saying TikTokers think TikTok is their best hope fo communication without the American government involved.

You started your note saying that you think your sister and you live worlds apart. I am trying to say that you are actually neighbors who wants the same thing.

You are the nostr:npub1pmhevxtlt3478pvmdqt7dftnv6zc2mzpdc569yjm6ks4k2jhezcs53uksr (husband) and your sister is me. It took a while for Ian to understand what I got out of TikTok. But once he understood why I believe TikTokers will be the next wave of Nostr adoption we founded nostr:npub17vscfmnmshfdw68llhduxtr4h0kkmyhzm4phzs40t3gqsmguz7lsak66ne.

Actually please check us out and send her our website. It's supposed to be able to explain to someone like her how this technology benefits us. Maybe this can help you guys get on the same page.

Yeah, I'll check out the website. I don't disagree with your points. I think out loud sometimes, back and forth like this helps me. So thank you for sharing your view on it because a positive view on TikTok is still alien to me.

So much cool stuf. It's 170 million Americans. From all walks of life, skills, and trades. Lots of Creators because TikTok was one of the first I think to actually pay people who got a lot of views. TikTok basically employs them without any security.

I've never used Tik Tok either and I like to think the ban also does not affect me, but maybe Mandana's right. I would like to learn more about her experience as an Iranian refugee. It sounds super interesting.

Satoshi cited wei-dai in the white paper and he wrote a paragraph I've spent a ton of time pondering since I read it.

"I am fascinated by Tim May’s crypto-anarchy. Unlike the communities traditionally associated with the word “anarchy”, in a crypto-anarchy the government is not temporarily destroyed but permanently forbidden and permanently unnecessary. It’s a community where the threat of violence is impotent because violence is impossible, and violence is impossible because its participants cannot be linked to their true names or physical locations."

I like this ideal, but decided to link this npub to my true name anyway because of the TikTok ban. Nyms lack the Ethos required to convince people why nostr is important. I want an open society on the Internet and although nostr is not perfect, I believe nostr is our best shot at creating an open society on the Internet, regardless of political winds.

Do you know much about Iran before the revolution? It was a very modern society. Women had more rights in Iran than in America.

But there were serious economic problems. There was a need for a revolution but people were straight up fooled. They thought Khomeini would save them.

Turned out that he lied to gain power and enforce religious extremism.

What does that remind you of?

I don't know much about Iran, but I did know it was secular in the 70's. Lying to gain power sounds like every politician to me, but the memecoin president comes to mind.

Biden did it too talking about the soul of a nation. And then funded a genocide he spent decades setting up in Congress. And also banned TikTok!

Thank you. I don't follow politics much. It doesn't suprise me. I'm not partisan. The system does what the system does regardless of who is on charge.

Government is like a hurricane, except hurricanes kill less people.

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH 🙌🏽

Please add the signup for the beta also with a Nostr npub and not only with the email, it would be better 🤙⚡

I thought you could already try the beta version by signing up with your email

No, we are still building! Just launched the company in the Fall. Sorry for the confusion.

We made an announcement on our podcast Wednesday that NextBlock BillBoard is coming this May.

Good on you for recognizing this, and trying to help her understand. Remember Jim Jones? Branch Davidians? There are many who cannot/will not see the images before their eyes. Keep your faith. Love your sister. Live your truth. Learn to leave it behind. I desperately want to ditch Fakebook, but my business is tied to it, at the moment, despite the mind-numbing soul-rot so pervasive on that “scat”form.

They simply don’t care because EvERyONe ELsE iS uSInG It So iT’s FInE.

My point of view is that lots of people accumulate egos over the power (or even imagined power) that social networks provide them and then they can't leave by their own willpower because power is a hella drug and losing it is a hella pain for the ego. They start running the rat race but in terms of social networks

My concern about teenagers who use tiktok and instagram is, are they trying to build their future when they grow up with hard work or do they think that life should be fun forever and try to make money doing fun things? The problem with these apps is that their environment is too fun and it keeps teenagers away from the real world.
