It's funny how bad Netflix's thumbnails are.

It's almost if they don't want anyone to watch their content.

Maybe that's the business model. It's a fixed monthly subscription regardless if you watch it or not.

And watching costs money, so bad thumbnails it is.

Which is why I like Plex. I can choose my own thumbnails and decide not to watch anything anyway.

How do you buy movies to put on flex?

All of my movies and tv shows are all legally purchased on blueray or dvd and ripped with handbrake to mkv, and properly renamed and organized using filebot. I definitely do not make use of file sharing protocols as that would be against the law.

Joking aside, I did actually need to buy the DVD of a Kdrama from Korea and rip it myself since no torrents were available. Now there is one.

We only torrent linux ISOs like cultured men

Buy them via disc/online service so you spent the money and then make or get a copy for personal use and put it on Plex. My collection is backed up in large binders of discs and multiple hard drives. Hard drive corruption is a complete pain... guess how I know. it's been nice to have the originals when I want to re-rip audio in FLAC. I would prefer to buy direct via V4V, but musicians don't try to sell their music anymore, they just stream it. 🤮 I've even emailed artists directly to buy albums and got no response... I really hope V4V becomes a mainstream thing.

They also change their thumbnails based on whatever their algorithms think you want to see.

If I log into my account and someone else logs into theirs side by side we'll see different main characters featured in the thumbnail. (Like "attractive female lead" for a male user, "attractice male lead" for a female user. At the very least. Usually its much more insidious. During the height of the woke resurgence a few years ago all the thumbnails were looking very "equitable-representation-y")

Netflix thumbnails are tailored via algorithm to try to get you to watch content which is why they'll change for the same show/movie once in a while. If you share your account with someone it might not be optimized for you. but yeah, most of the time the thumbnails are 🤨

I’ve had a movie I made on Netflix. They have multiple thumbnails for each movie. I suspect they show you one suited to their demographic analysis of you, but I know they also show you new thumbnails when you scroll to the end and back around so your brain doesn’t feel like you’re looking at (and passing over) the same content multiple times. And if they didn’t get you on the first thumbnail, they might get you on the second or third

Sure, but it's not the variance, it's how bad the design is. Compare it to YouTube. It's night and day.
