Here is the finished product of my beef tallow making from yesterday. The liquid form right after straining, and the solid form after cooling. 2 quart jars and 1 pint jar. I am pleased with the results, and after watching multiple yt videos, i decided to try the method that looked like it would be the easiest. So i just put the fat into a pot with a lid, then put it into the oven on low heat. Took longer than i thought it would, but that was not a problem. #foodstr #grownostr #beeftallow

For soap?

I just want it for cooking. For soap, i think i would have to have alot more to work with. I tried a sample from the butcher where we got our half cow, and loved it.

And you can use it for so much! I did mine in the slow cooker and it also took longer than expected.

I wanted to make skincare stuff with it and had to do this a few times as the first batch smelled just like beef 🀣 it was horrible 🀣

Yeah i heard people mention the strong smell, but mine has only a faint smell, and i have a pretty sensitive nose.

Quality beef I think in your case? 😊

Eventually the skin cream worked beautifully. Turns out I had to re melt it a few times and then once mixed up I had to leave it on the shelf for a month - now it’s lovely stuff but before that it was very beefy!! πŸ˜‚

Wow, good to know. I might eventually experiment with using it for salve, but this batch is for cooking. And yes its very high quality beef, raised locally by a family that is part of The Beef Initiative.

I think it was Bumblebee Apothecary that has some lovely recipes for when you want to make your own πŸ’œ

What are you planning to do with it? (Would love to be schooled...) We used ours to make suet for the neighborhood birds, but it's got to have more uses than that...

I'll be cooking with it. I know you can make salves and other skin care with it. But eating quality fats is very important to me, with all the nasty seed oils at the stores nowadays.

I render lard from our pastured pigs. I use it for most of our frying and sautΓ©ing. I have also made tallow from sheep fat. Used it to make a skin cream. It did smell sheep-y, but I add essential oils to cover it up.

Good idea😊
