YouTube's algorithm is so great that it never ever shows me channels I'm subscribed to, but fills my homepage with videos from channels I've browsed in the past 3 days, including many things I've already watched, and completely forgets everything I've done before that. That's the amazing winner UX we should be aiming at!
Discussion
When my son was little, before we had the ability to have different YouTube profiles or before he had his own account, just watching a few Minecraft videos would completely wreck my feed.
Watch 3 videos of Stampy?
HERE ARE 47284772 VIDEOS YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN SEEING.
🤣
That's why YouTube sucks
It has become noticeably worse. Borderline unusable.
I’d rather go to Rumble now since I have to search for what I want to watch.

YouTube algo sucks ass. Shows me stuff I’ve watched before. Sometimes if I watch some video, my entire feed is filled up with similar videos on the exact same topic.
It's like that story of engineers reinforcing the parts of planes that had bullet holes.
Don't recommend more videos like the ones watched, I already covered that topic, recommend topics I haven't watched but that a person like me might like.
All the major things are like that too. Shopping for something means I'll be served ads for things I already bought. FB presumes I need to read every new reply to something I have interacted with. In some ways it's better than preemptively deciding what I should see, but also very useless. 😅
😂🤝🏻🚮
Mine is filled with “It’s not too late to start a YouTube channel. Starting one in your fifties is the best time and here is why”, “Americans living in Europe”, “People selling their homes to live on a cruise liner”
Plus some stuff I’ve actually subscribed to. It’s bonkers.
Is anyone able to build a YouTube search platform that is sans ANY suggested or recommended content?
The amount of knowledge on that platform is greatly obscured by the amount of flaming trash cans of brain-rot, and those shorts always suck my kids’ brains away (and my own) when we are searching for an answer to something.
one of the worsts for sure
I detect a hint of sarcasm.
This is the extent of my YouTube interaction lately:

And that’s why TikTok got so popular, their algorithm for recommendations was extremely polished, way better than anything the west saw at that time.
So true
And when you search it breaks up the search with a huge section of irrelevant videos you've watched the other day. Lol cry
finds relevant things for me. i still use youtube a lot. when someone shows their face it is more believable compared to texts on google.
Use freetube/newpipe/tubular

Worst is when my kid searches and plays one Minecraft video on my account and completely wipes out months of my watch history on the algorithm and all I get is Minecraft stuff
I choose not to sign in. So the algo is ‘deactivated‘ and shows *nothing*. This is SO peaceful, can’t tell you!
These days I take my ‘algo’ from recommendations on Nostr or deliberate searches. Spending a fraction of time on that yt-time-hoover now.
Highly recommended!
Spotify algorithm on the other hand is great for both discovery and following
MY YOUTUBE IS GUN REVIEWS AND MUSIC VIDEOS. 😂
Same here so silly 🤪
self host an rss reader
YouTube's algorithm is garbage. Another reason to build decentralized alternatives. Free speech and actual choice, imagine that.
I have my history off and it punishes me for that, saying it can't recommend me anything because I won't share my history with it, even though it has my likes on videos. furthermore, if you browse in incognito, it does suggest videos to you, so clearly, it's a retaliation. I have my history off, so out does recommend to me random stuff, like if I was a newbie. Such a silly system.
But as I always say, terrible products are usually because the developers/engineers themselves are not still using it, or what, they wouldn't stand for it and change it.
I am not sure about YouTube's current algorithm but 5 years back, it was really good at finding niche but interesting stuff. I would never have found my favourite moment of the internet if not for YouTube algo 😅
Now that main page gets a bit repetitive but the tabs on top, showing the genres of content you're watching are decent and the "New to You" tab is good
But maybe it's only me
