Gay jokes and gay teasing was the best part of free speech and the Left ruined it... gay.

Today it occurred to me that the word "gay" got hijacked to begin with.

I have now lost the option to say. "I'm so gay right now" When I'm in a good mood.

This is what they took from us 😔

💯

Same with queer. Try reading Tolkien today.

I would support you saying that but you're right, some idiotic authoritarians who fail to parse nuance well would screech at you for doing so.

It's all about how the word is used.

If it's used with hateful intent, it's not a very kind thing to do.

If it's used without hateful intent to communicate accurately, there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm definitely not a leftist but I had a brother until about 2.5 years ago. He was gay. Pretend you're me and you have to sit there and listen to people talk shit about your dead brother who they never even knew. He was a mechanic. He was the best mechanic in the shop and he changed the morale of that shop during his tenure there. He even helped the wife of a fellow mechanic to leave her home and get over her agoraphobia.

But yeah...it's totally appropriate to make jokes at the expense of everyone within a group, especially when they didn't choose to be a part of that group...a fact I can verify having grown up with him, watching him grow. The flamboyant tendencies were there just under the surface going back to preschool age.

You're free to speak however you like, but maybe you should consider using language that is specific and helpful rather than vague and hurtful to people you don't know whose perspectives you've not considered?

Can’t joke about randomly protected classes of people. Topic has been deemed off limits because of someone’s feelings.

“Making fun of disabled people, is retarded.”

With a name like Sovereign Bull though I would imagine that libertarian values would be something that meshes with you. Libertarian values would include treating people as individuals, not as members of a group. Perhaps you don't consider yourself libertarian though, and that would make a lot of sense as to why you would be willing to paint an entire population of diverse individuals with a broad brush.

Equal treatment means that I don’t believe any people should be exempt from being joked about, regardless of who they are or what group they choose to associate with. I’m libertarian in that I don’t think speech should be policed based on the feelings of an individual or a group.

My sister used to call things gay all the time before she died. She was a parking ticket officer, which she also thought was pretty gay, but she had to pay her bills. I miss her a lot.

Some things are gay.

It's not the word.

It's how the word is used.

When it's used derogatorily, that's really not ok, but you're free to be a dick if you want and I'll fight for your right to be a dick.

It's your choice though whether or not you want to be a dick.

If you want to use the word in a neutral, denotational manner, have at it. I certainly don't mind. I used the word when it's appropriate to do so.

> especially when they didn't choose

Correct

woah

When it comes to comedy personally I think nothing is off limits, but I see some really harsh responses to this. That doesn't fit with my approach to life.

I'm sure losing your brother was really painful and I'm sorry you went through that. 🙏

I agree but text isn't really the most clear cut venue for comedy.

Text can be really ambiguous and people often lob venomous words from behind the shield of "I was joking". I'm sure some were just joking but others were not, and in either case, the potential for readers to misinterpret the joke or correctly interpret the venom exists, making the potential for the hate to propagate greater.

I've laughed my ass off at comedians making gay jokes. They were comedians and it wasn't comedy via text. There are so many facial and body language cues, vocal intonation, comedic timing, etc that go into comedy and text based stuff just doesn't have any of it.

Text based communication just probably isn't the best place for that humor.

To a large degree we create our own version of reality through the interpretations we asign to events.

If 100 people are at a comedy show and the comic tells a joke, you will have 100 unique emotional responses based on 100 unique life experiences. Some may result in laughter while others may be apathy, anger, sadness, grief, ect.

If the comic manages to trigger laughter in a majority of the audience he will be considered a 'good comic', but these determinations are not objective. They are entirely based on the interpretations of those who are reacting.

I developed this perspective after studying Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg and The Presence Process by Michael Brown. They helped me to clarify the difference between events and our reactions to them. I would recommend both of those books to every human on the planet.

Again, my condolences for your brother. I can only imagine the heartbreak and dispair you've been through. If you would like to talk about any of this further feel free to message me directly.

Time to claim it back then

i’ll be honest here, gay people make gay jokes all the time. straight left people ruined it tbh.

I'm straight and I guess I'll just have to keep the tradition going.

breeder jokes can be a thing; so can those with less discretionary income and time because of it !

hey if they’re actually funny i’m with you. you’re not a straight leftist so it’s fine 😂.

but seriously, gay people joke about about it all the time. it’s never serious unless it’s someone threatening bodily harm and shit. gen z is lowkey much more chill about jokes and shit then your generation tbh.

Great to know.

I believe it was Gen Z that started being offended by everything, and scared of the world. For instance, Gen Z has no idea how to handle racism but to make things more racist.

you gotta be a millennial right? that was all you guys. we were in like middle school when y’all did this shit LOL.

Gen X. We didn’t care about a damn thing but only what really mattered. My gf’s kid is Gen Z and he even says his generation is screwed😂
