#Keet is a proper p2p & serverless replacement for #Telegram
Discussion
Ah yes, the app that said "we will open source in December" two years ago and still operates on the "just trust us bro!" model like every other centralized chat app.

not only is it half closed source it hardly works properly either, has the same key-sharing problem as simplex (you can't have the same identifier on separate installations) and the actual "holepunch" technology isn't always effective at getting results
in all seriousness, i don't know what the fuck they bother with this nonsense for, you can use the IPFS protocol to enable bidirectional peer to peer connections, including internet connected nodes performing rendezvous for your peers
and not only that, it got abandoned because Tor changed the API so much it broke it but there was a p2p chat that used tor hidden services called Torchat... i'm not sure, i don't think anyone has bothered to try and get that working again but literally can use tor hidden service identifiers as your public keys to connect to you when you are online
all of them have a problem of async messaging though, something that Nostr can solve if some devs get their heads out of their arses and start putting full relays inside clients and building desktop clients with backend services that run as your inbox/outbox
all possible, all can be done with the tech, yet somehow nobody is actually doing any of it. retarded.
Is it fully open source yet?
The GUI isn't but the underlying pear stack or holepunch/hypercore protocol is.
Neither desktop nor mobile apps are open source. We have no idea what is happening. It's just trust us.
The entire pear stack that makes Keet work is open
Pears.com
That's really really cool because other devs can build on that stack, but if the keet app is not open source, it could as well be spyware because we can't verify if it does what it says it does.
It will be eventually. They don't want to give away everything they are working on until it's all working. The behavior of the app makes it pretty clear that it's p2p. Telegram is spyware, Keet is fine.
Yes, holesail/liveport are built on Pear & Peardrive is also being built on Pear. Holesail is already usable.
They've been saying "open source soon" for two years now. My privacy sensitive friends won't touch it until they can verify, and I can see why. Open source is prerequisite for Don't trust, verify.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really grateful that they're building cool shit. It's coming more from a point of: what's actually verifiably secure and private that we can use to communicate?
They opened the underlying stuff. Your privacy sensitive friends still using Twitter & Telegram? Using something doesn't require posting anything especially sensitive in the app. But it's a way to create groups that can't be censored, & we have seen that Telegram can be.
No they're using XMPP only.
Nostr is the replacement for Telegram
Nostr is the replacement for twitter
No, replacing twitter is a losing battle.
Nostr is the base protocol for social. Even p2p apps can use nostr.
Telegram is not p2p. Telegram is a central server that mediates between multiple parties.
More naturally a group or community based nostr relay replaces telegram than a p2p app.
Keet behaves like Telegram
Nostr behaves like Twitter
I suspect the Pear stack under Keet will also eventually be used to improve file storage for Nostr because Nostr still has some scaling issues.
Everything will be replaced. This is how the internet will be rebuilt. Gradually and then suddenly.
I am sure you are right about keet’s intended behavior.
You missed some great discussion at nostr:npub1nstrcu63lzpjkz94djajuz2evrgu2psd66cwgc0gz0c0qazezx0q9urg5l precisely on filesharing.
Regarding telegram, have you tested any of the NIP-29 prototypes?
Are the file sharing discussions about eliminating relays?
I haven't but what is working right now is Nostr with Twitter behavior & Keet with Telegram behavior. It's possible that Keet will get a global feed & offer a nice Twitter like experience, or that Nostr will get rooms that create a nice Telegram like experience, but where is the already normie friendly app that does either of those?
On file sharing: yes, and more.
On user friendly apps: it is early days. Have keet team considered integrating nostr as the social ID base layer?
