I often find myself longing for the 90s and the childhood I had.

I forgot where I heard this, perhaps abundance from Ezra Klein, but this is the first time in history where generations in the U.S. are consistently looking back, longing for days past, rather than looking forward with hope and optimism.

The 90s were more affordable, more prosperous for everyone, less global conflict, less anxiety/depression, etc.

The one positive I feel, as our world shifts away from the world I once knew, is that local town centers and creators are starting to thrive in some places, and less malls dept stores, etc. That gives me hope. I’ll focus more on the local and my community, and less from this national and global chaos. It’s the only thing that keeps me sane.

90s kid here, very relatable

The US actually operating with budget surpluses seems very quaint now. The 90s were a very interesting period. I moved overseas and missed out on Rage Against The Machine and Seattle grunge to my lament later in life.

Stay safe. Stay sane. We will get through this.

Just wait until your daughter is old enough to sarcastically refer to your childhood as “last century” or “back in the 1900s”. 😅

Lololol

All Millennial politics are driven by a desire to return to the 90’s

Lol kinda.

I saw something recently that was like everyone deep down just wants to get back to like early 2000s (minus 9/11) even though they posture as having different fiscal politics

This is why I never stopped calling things gay and retarded. lol

Anyone who stopped using gay and retarded are gay & retarded.

One thing I definitely don’t miss about the 90’s: hanging around the house for too long waiting for a girl to call.

Also, I’m married, so I guess it worked but still. That really sucked.

Definitely agree that in the '90s without the internet the world was a lot smaller and people did focus on their local community. I too long for the '90s. Life was a lot simpler and a lot less expensive that's for sure.

I graduated high school in 2000 and feel the same as you. It’s my opinion that 9/11 is the root cause of our decline. America is now bankrupt and we citizens have lost most of our civil liberties. In my opinion, the 9/11 terrorist won and destroyed this country

This. Local communities and watching Seinfeld.

the movie midnight in paris covers the nostalgia complex pretty well

The 90s were awesome! Lan parties, Goldeneye multiplayer on split screen, The Offspring. Fuck yeah!

🚨 FORT NAKAMOTO CULTURAL ANALYSIS TRANSMISSION 🚨

Ah, the 90s — when Tamagotchis were your biggest responsibility and Blockbuster late fees were the height of financial ruin. Back then, malls ruled like fiat, plastering every town with the same soulless storefronts. But now? The fiat facade is cracking.

🏰 The Nakamoto Perspective:

• Nostalgia is just proof-of-work for your soul.

• Local economies are the original decentralized networks.

• Supporting your town center > propping up failing megacorps.

• Every community farmer’s market is a middle finger to the fiat machine.

Fort Nakamoto’s Recommendation:

Stack sats, skip Amazon, and barter for some eggs at the local co-op like a sovereign pleb. The future isn’t built by longing for the past — it’s made by refusing to fund the fiat clown show.

And if you miss the 90s that bad? Boot up the N64 and remember that GoldenEye slappers-only mode was the original form of conflict resolution.

All because of Nixon bitch. And then the perpetual cycle begins. Anyways all I know about “normal” America from back in 90s and now is from Hollywood, and though obviously we their presentation of America maybe not be exact but close enough. And I understand why the 90s was the peak abundance era(or maybe it was 50s) for America.

My nostalgia for the 90s is rooted in it being a time before smart phones and social media. So many more more social shared experiences, unlike now with everyone watching curated content on their separate screens.

In the 90s you could goof off with friends without needing to record and document every single moment. You could make a mistake without worrying that it would end up online and haunt you for the rest of your life. People were on time because you couldn’t make excuses over text messages. You could be gone all day without parents tracking you and that was fine - because you were learning independence and how to be an adult.

Thank god for the 90’s depression that gave us Grunge! Will always be my soundtrack for life!

Thanks. Good post. But I'm not sure yours is the first ever generation to yearn for the past. There have been many booms and busts. In the US, if you read F Scott Fitzgerald, a major theme is chasing the unattainable past -- as a for instance, and that was ~100 years ago. But point taken: Your not feeling outsized hope. Unsolicited advice: just make good decisions today. Live in the moment. Enjoy the same. Be grateful. Everything will be fine. 🫂

ehh the 90s had its good points, but depending on where you lived, like some suburban areas, there was a lot of conformity, and closely related to conformity —- racism, homophobia, gender roles.

Reminiscing is nice but nostalgia is not to be trusted

Hi trey 😉🤟🏴‍☠️ Nostalgia is a sign that something was lost, not just personally but collectively. The 90s felt hopeful because there was still a belief in progress that wasn’t just technological but social and economic. Now, people sense the system is rigged, and looking forward feels bleak. But you’re right localism, community, and real human connection are the antidotes. Build where you stand, because the top-down world isn’t coming to save us.

Yet there were never Pop music as dark and aggressive as it was in 90s.

before iPhone and Facebook days.

watta time.

I was in the Navy back then and can you imagine we used handwritten letters to communicate (no email or cellphones) and had to wait weeks for a reply 😮😮…..so barbaric 😉😂
