I know it's best practice and all that generally, yes yes. But really adds another barrier to entry here? No? It's also a monetary barrier on top of that.

It's some sort of tor ....thing lol (I know nothing). On android. If you're on amethyst you can see the Tor option in settings and it's mentioned there

what i would rec is additionally:
.click on "choose apps" and adding all your Nostr, Bitcoin/Lightning, privacy chat apps in there
of all your other non opensource and surveillance apps on your phone most probably will not work properly with orbot (your browser, a simple google, government things, online banking etc).. so best to only lrt it run for relevant apps as i listed above
and dont forget to login again and then enable tor, also for other apps that have that function (e.g. some bitcoin lightning apps like Phoenix)

No, I was referring to tunnel splitting. Ie using a vpn or orbit for specific apps. On iOS when using orbot or vpn it’s a system wide thing.

a free service is ProtonVPN (both available in app and on desktop)!
you can only connect to 3 countries, so if something is censored in all those countries you cannot reap the benefits of VPN (next to covering your IP, bypassing geoblockages is the main usage of VPN rly)
Although as a positive spin.. 'you need a VPN to use nostr' does add a sort of cyber wild west mystique maybe?;)

u technically dont *need* VPN or Tor, you can also just rawdog it.. nothing *has* to change in comparison to what u did before if you dont want or see the need too
it's just many people arent even aware their IP is by default exposed when online - if the dangers of exposing your IP isn't relevant for your personal digital threat model you can just ignore it 🤍

I wouldn't want to be explaining to someone I could potentially onboard that a troll is posting IP addresses, cos that doesn't usually happen on social media lol.

in the bitcoin sphere and esp on Odells timeline there's just a heightened awareness of privacy tools.. the demographics attracted to his account is not ppl with disinterested for digital hygiene per se

Sure you don't NEED to but it seems to be unanimously recommended?
It's more recommended to use a VPN on other social media because they are full of trackers and cookies who are using your ip address and location for targeting ads and more, we don't have all that on nostr and i hope we never have it, so you don't really need it here except if you want absolute privacy
I think the point is that you need a VPN to improve your privacy on Nostr as at first glance it might give you the false impression that it's already built in
