Hey #asknostr and #grownostr I'm looking to get my wife a yarn bowl for her birthday. She has been getting back into knitting and I see her struggling every night with a massive ball of yarn going everywhere.

What features are important? I'm assuming bigger bowl is better? Does having a curved lip on the bowl help or is it better to have a tall bowl?

Any specific recommendations?

Good question. But my guess is that most of us are young white dudes who didnโ€™t know that was a thing. Haha

Lolll I know there's some young white dudes around here with girlfriends/wives that knit! Help a brother out!!!

It's the blind leading the blind rn

My wife just used a tote bag for all of her yarn and accessories. It's simple.

Lol maybe I'm over thinking this. Par for the course really.

Ahhh so what I'm looking for is a container (bowl) where she can pull on the one string she's working on and the ball will unroll as she's going but not go flying everywhere and start getting all tangled up. The tote bag makes perfect sense for storage tho.

Hmm. That could be a useful tool. Maybe I'll get Katie one ๐Ÿคฃ

Yes, a bigger bowl is better, especially if she does color changes in her pieces, but also can be hard to find.

Tall is nice to keep yarn from bouncing out.

Something Iโ€™ve recently seen that is pretty cool is yarn BOXES - they have lids!

Most yarn bowls have a kind of loopy cutout section as well as a couple of holes. Iโ€™d favor extra loop sections over lots of holes if thereโ€™s any chance she might switch projects.

Apparently the (cheaper) wood ones if not sanded good, can snag the yarn.

Ohhh didn't think of that but yeah makes sense. It's gotta be real smooth. If it snags that's a dealbreaker

Hard to give an opinion on a gift for someone I donโ€™t know, but while I usually love simplicity, those flowers donโ€™t do much for me. The wood colour choice though is spot on!

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the flowers either and I don't think my wife will either. I found some that look like cauldron shaped. Those seem pretty cool. The search continues!

GL!

If you think sheโ€™d like a bigger one, I saw some on Etsy.

The wood one you have is a fairly typical size which I have always thought too small for my own purposes ๐Ÿ˜‚ but I do color changes all the time and need it to hold at least two balls or skeins of different yarn (sometimes even more).

Iโ€™ve got a goal of making my own since I do pottery as well ๐Ÿ˜‚ just havenโ€™t gotten to it yet, but I could make it basically the way I like
