Currently #Damus defaults to "notes and replies" but the replies are from people I follow. So a post from a person I follow only gets bumped if they reply to it or someone else that I follow replies to it. In order for that to work I'm incentivized to follow A LOT of accounts who *might* engage with the accounts that I really want to hear from.
This approach also limits the potential reach of accounts with a small number of followers, but who might post quality content *that I'm interested in*. For example, if I'm into marathon training I might follow a couple of people who are also into that. They might be 2 follows out of a few hundred. If I only check in a couple of times a day (which is what I do on weekdays) those posts get lost in the mix. And some niche accounts may just never get high enough engagement to be able to rely on replies as the boosting mechanism.
Without an algorithm people are also incentivized to post often to stay relevant an in people's feeds. Quantity over quality for relevancy.
The customization in #nostrgram helped with this a bit, as users had a lot of control over the feed and you could easily toggle the filter to increase the likelihood you didn't miss important stuff. But it looks like Nostrgram broke on April 22 or something bc I can't see any posts since then.
On nostr I feel like we don't have to worry so much about the problems with current algorithms because you can always switch to a different client if it gets too oppressive.
I see @jack has chimed in that he sticks to "posts and replies" only. But this is a ton of noise. For example, I follow a few #nostr developers. They are very often in the "posts and replies" section because there on here a lot and they're talking with people about what they've built. Nothing wrong with that - almost always completely irrelevant to me.
That section is even more noise because of a culture that's emerged of "don't like - comment or zap." So now we have a lot of low-effort comments that are just 🤙 or "agree" or "this" or 💯.
For a person who doesn't want to spend hours around here, an algorithm could greatly enhance the experience. I think we'll find that the first client that does this well - who is transparent and gives users control - will be very popular.
An algorithm was never the problem. It was that they needed to increase advertising revenues and an algorithm tuned in a particular way was the best way to do that. Then it became clear that (a) you could also use it to censor and (b) if people didn't like it then fuck'em because no one could easily just up and leave for another platform because of the network effect.
Ok, I'll stop. :)
You need to go spend some time on Bluesky’s “what’s hot” feed if you don’t think algorithms are problems.
I don’t have bluesky and don’t have an interest in trying another platform.
I’m not saying there aren’t shitty algorithms. Of course there are.
And a chronological feed is an algorithm. It’s not a question of algorithm versus no algorithm. It’s which algorithm is right for which users.
The right algorithm is the one the user controls and can tweak/change or turn off. Discoverability on Nostr has much room for improvement. I agree with what you’re saying on that front. The crucial piece is leaving the user in control of their feed.
