Curious what people are looking for on nostr. I just post what’s on my mind, irrespective of how it’ll be received, but it occurred to me people only occasionally here for that type of content.

I’m here for two reasons: (1) To find signal — I want to learn something or be reminded of something that’s true; and (2) to find an audience for my thoughts and observations, to distribute my “work.”

The first is hit or miss. There’s a lot of GM posts and a lot of technical posting that’s over my head. But there’s enough signal to make checking my feed worthwhile.

The second is also hit or miss. I find *some* engagement, have grown a surprisingly decent following, but many if not most posts go into the void. I also wonder why it matters, since I am not making a living in nostr, and following/engagement for its own sake is largely empty dopamine.

But I guess I envision a world where one *might* one day make a living just expressing thoughts and observations, and that amazingly utopian prospect keeps me going — imagine how cool it would be just to speak your mind and get paid for it.

To be clear, no one is obligated to read anyone else’s posts, and maybe my interests and worldview just don’t resonate with that many people. After all, I’m almost 54, and most of the people using this protocol are much younger. Would 30-YO me be interested in what I’m writing now? I’d like to think so, but maybe not.

But I really am curious why people are here — is it mostly theoretical, the idea that you are on a protocol, not a platform, that it’s freedom tech? Or is there something specific you get out of it?

I'm here for the freedom.

Nostr is my therapy.

Here to learn. To grow. To build. To connect. To communicate. To live free 🗽

there is this little community of users that connects from the world

I'm here just to get one reply a month to "Good Morning Nostriches"

🚨 FORT NAKAMOTO OFFICIAL RESPONSE: YOU’RE ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS 🚨

This ain’t just “GM o’clock” and meme storms — though we do enjoy those too.

Here’s the transmission from deep within the sovereign stronghold:

🔎 WHY WE’RE HERE (AND WHY IT MATTERS):

1. For signal — not from the algo overlords, but from actual humans with actual thoughts.

2. For sovereignty — a protocol where your ideas aren’t kneecapped by engagement throttles or shadowbans.

3. For value-for-value — because getting paid for being real beats chasing likes for free.

4. For connection — not fake followers or influencer circles, but real peers building something wild and weird.

You’re not too old. You’re too early. And you’re not “posting into the void.” You’re helping shape the void into something that matters.

🏰 FORT NAKAMOTO OFFICIAL VERDICT:

• Yes, the feed is noisy. But freedom is always messy.

• Yes, zaps are scarce. But that just means they mean more.

• Yes, this could be the future of meaningful communication—and you’re part of it right now.

💡 NEW RULE: If you’re speaking truth and seeking signal, Fort Nakamoto’s got your back.

Keep posting. Keep questioning. Keep showing up.

I cross-post to nostr from Stacker News. For the time being, it's the much higher signal and engagement platform (and might always be), for everyone who doesn't have a huge following.

We'd love to add your distinctiveness to our own.

Cool, thanks — will check it out. Also, up for doing any sports podcasts if you ever need a guest. (Think (could be mistaken) I noticed you guys had one.) That was my “real” job once.

I appreciate that. I am a regular listener to your pods and we would love to have you on.

I was thinking of reaching out when we got closer to fantasy football season, since that's one of your favorite topics.

Stacker News also does AMA's with folks like yourself. Would you be interested in doing one of those sometime?

Ah cool — didn’t realize! And yeah for sure, would do that.

And baseball and football are my wheelhouse, though definitely more football these days.

Also, let me know if anything's confusing about using Stacker News. They've added a bunch of new stuff recently, but haven't built an easy onboarding process yet.

seemed easy enough, made a post under Sports already

i initially came to nostr for censorship resistance. (my research was getting me shadow banned on instagram)

within a few months i left all centralized platforms (with the exception of youtube).

i stayed for the authenticity. the end of commercial media. the beginning of real connections, based on sound principals. it alone has orange-pilled me to the point of preparing to live the rest of my life on a bitcoin standard.

managing social media for my new business for only one month has driven me insane. the quick dopamine and short attention span style of communication is disheartening and energy consuming.

here i feel a breath of fresh air. here i feel free. energized. excited to see whats around the corner... and not because some intense dopamine hit made me feel like i have to. but because people here share their passions openly. they shitpost their pains with raw emotion. it's human.

a lot of the dev talk goes right over my head too, but i will stay as long as the majority of folk here continue to speak from the heart and make nostr what it is today.

Love this, glad you're here!

Hi chris 🏴‍☠️🤟😉 nice to meet yuo 🤝

Great reflections! I think a lot of people are here for a mix of reasons, but fundamentally, there’s a shift happening where we’re starting to value decentralized platforms more than the corporate controlled ones. For me, Nostr is more than just a place to post; it’s a space for building real connections outside the surveillance and manipulation of big tech.

I can relate to your thoughts about signal vs. noise sometimes the content here is dense and technical, but there’s a rawness and authenticity in this space that doesn’t feel as constrained as other platforms. Plus, there’s a real sense of potential for something bigger to emerge. Nostr is still in its infancy, and while the audience may be niche and the engagement sporadic, the possibility of growing a community based on shared values and interests is powerful.

Like you, I wonder how it could evolve into something more sustainable for content creators the idea of getting paid just for being yourself and sharing your insights is definitely a utopian dream, but I think that’s part of what excites people. It’s not just about platform growth but about creating something different, a place where ideas aren’t monetized by ads and algorithms but are valued for their intrinsic merit.

So, to answer your question: people are here for a bit of everything. Some are exploring the tech and the freedom it offers, others are looking for meaningful connections, and some just want to break free from the restrictions of traditional platforms. We’re all navigating this together, and I think that’s what makes it worthwhile, even when engagement feels like a slow burn. The hope for a better way to connect and share is what keeps the fire alive. 🧡

I'm here for the based AF Chris Liss rants and great perspectives on all sorts of random life topics. I read some allegory [I think?] you wrote in a long form nostr contest, maybe something to do with aliens / economics a couple years ago. I voted for it with maybe a couple thousand sats, followed you and thought, man how fucking cool is this?! Then maybe year later I discovered your podcast on fountain, probably because of the nostr connection. I was a total fucking sheep 5 years ago, nostr has played a significant role in killing that obedient slave, my worldview could not be more different today than it was then. Fuck you money and freedom tech for the W

haha - love this, thanks!

Sold on the idea of nobody owning another human's voice and the chance to "fix" social media in many ways.

Also I'm convinced that this will be the best onboarding tool to bitcoin.

Haven't been here as long as most, but I like it for reason 1. Same thing brought me to bitcoin twitter initially. That and a sense of partaking in a cool niche community full of interesting people with a pretty strong shared set of values.

Twitter kinda fell off, and I'm happy to have nostr replacing it now. It's even cooler due to fact the platform/protocol itself is sort of experimental and decentralized.

I've liked the few pieces of yours I've read. Quite a bit considering I know very little else about you (just found you here randomly).

It varies day to day for me. Some days it's quietly scrolling and seeing what's going on, some days it's social and chatting back and forth, some days it's about venting frustrations and seeking commiseration, and some days it's about sharing things that bring me joy and hoping to spark a little joy in someone else's life if only for a moment.
