It saddens me to know that Millennials and younger have never known airports as the places of fearless excitement and discovery they use to be. No constant, droning, vacuous warnings. No endless queues in wait for invasive scanning or groping. No panopticon.

I refuse to accept this or worse for my son. We will starve the beast. We will bring it to heel.

It’s #Bitcoin or tyranny.

For the first time a couple of days ago on my United flight from EWR back to Europe they were using face scanning to board passengers at the gate. No boarding pass or ID. It was a messy boarding so I was able to board through another improvised line and avoid the face scan, but who am I kidding - they are using it earlier at "security" already, so it doesn't really make any difference.

Fearless excitement? I don't remember them ever being that.

Maybe I’m older. I absolutely do.

I remember airports as exciting. It was the first stop on an adventure - variety of people and languages and shops. It also felt safe.

Exactly this.

I'm 44. But then again I didn't do a lot of traveling when I was younger.

I remember the days of being able to go to the airport just for the fun of it. Now you’re presumed to be a criminal if you don’t have a sanctioned reason to be there.

At Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (KCLE), they used to have an observation deck that people could go outside and watch the goings on while waiting for departing or arriving flights. This was before 9/11 and before the requirement to have a ticket to get down the concourse. It’s still there but it’s long since been closed. It’s too bad, really. I spent a part of my high school days there. That place got me into Amateur Radio from running into a likeminded person who happened to be in Amateur Radio. That place also helped stoke my desire to get my pilot’s license, which I did do. That place also helped keep me thin because I would ride my bike out there. It’s all changed.

Exactly this.

So luxurious!

Us elder millennials remember.

This is prolly my moment to discuss our carpool options vs Wendy's shifts

I mean … no more smoking sections on airplanes is a win right? Haha

Totally get it … when I travelled to visit family, my dad basically dropped me off at the gate … veeery different from what we experienced …

I’ll never fly again. I’m over it.

I'm right there with you Shawn.
