Cold Storage Device

#[0]

Ive accomplished the impossible i think 🤔😂.

Taking an existing term & eliminating the real issue we all have with the existing term by not mentioning the term "wallet", meanwhile also not fixating solely on the "signing" portion of executing a cold storage setup.

If the argument is that hardware wallet is confusing, I don’t see how cold storage device is any less confusing. SeedSigner is stateless, it stores nothing… but it is used for signing 🤷‍♂️

Lets break this into two parts!

1. Hardware wallets are not wallets - ultra confusing

2. Signing is the secondary action - after private key generation -> "seed"

Then comes signing a tx -> "signer"

...do you not use the term "cold storage"?

I see it being used throughout bitcoin history.

Personally I’m comfortable with hardware wallet. Doesn’t really matter all that much once you learn how to use it. You could call a thing a car or mobile enclosed chair radio 😂

Its like calling "car" -> "road"

Meanwhile calling "road" -> "hardware road"

It does matter what a "wallet" is.

For ex,

Youd never give someone your bitcoin wallet information, but you might share a seedsigner.

But now they aren’t all stateless and it’s a good idea to use multiple devices of different makes in multisig. So now do I need a Cold Storage Device (seedsigner)and a Signjng Device (Passport, Keystone, etc).

I’ve just never had any confusion calling one a hardware device with a newbie. Signing device also makes sense. It’s just learning how to use it.

I’ll give you that cold storage device is less bad than air-gapped bitcoin computer though.

Hardware wallet or signing device *

They are all cold storage devices, & yes they are bitcoin computers at their core,

Not all of them are airgapped or stateless though,

& none of them are wallets.

Ex cont.

lets say you use one of those other devices, that hold their state, you can throw the device into a fire & your wallet would be unaffected if you have your seed phrase.

If you want to continue using signing device at least youre not using the word "wallet"...even though it only describes a less important action than private key generation.

Alas, if you wanna continue using HWW go for it brah!
