Can also recommend Belkin RT3200 with openwrt. Wifi6 and super fast. Got it below 100 ...

Thank you. Ordered one.

That's a great VPN protection wifi for your home. Just bought one.

Only super fast with wireguard? Isn’t that protocol less private?

Yes, wireguard is an order of magnitude faster than OpenVPN.

Thought on Mullvad?

WG is fast and easy to set up too.

Proton VPN switched over to WG as the default connection type a while back. I notice zero reduction in speed tests now between a clear connection and VPN connection.

I went with the unbranded version of the protectli hardware from aliexpress and then flashed it with coreboot and installed pfsense. It works flawlessly but was quite a learning experience moving from a crappy standard broadband router.

Can you please tell me which unbranded model you used and how did you get coreboot on it?

Great recommendation overall!

I need to investigate this in more detail, but I'm currently nomading, so it doesn't make much sense for me specifically. I'm more looking for a small device that I could use as local media 'n' stuff server that connects to whatever wifi and that all my devices use by default.

There is a mobile router by same company for normads https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-axt1800/

It is not as strong as the home router but has all the functionalities.

That's intriguing. I'm thinking about it in combination with https://www.amazon.com/MeLE-Quieter3C-Computer-Function-Industrial/dp/B0B74KLMWQ as media server. That would still be quite portable.

The $100 router has a built in VPN?

It has a built in VPN client and server. Client for you to connect your home to a VPN provider or your on VPS. Server for you to connect your mobile devices to your home when you are traveling.

I bought this router recently. It's really good.

Seems like a good way to be sure guests get routed through a VPN. Now to figure out how to disable their 4G/5G connections when in a specific geolocation and force them through the VPN...

This is great, thank you. Thoughts on the Firewalla gold as a simpler approach?
