How can we make it more accessible and safe for people in Iran to use nostr?
Discussion
چگونه می توانیم استفاده از Nostr را برای مردم ایران در دسترس تر و ایمن تر کنیم؟
VPN would be the easiest option IMO
Only government approved VPNs are legal. Proxies need to be more accessible
Had a feeling the answer wouldn't be quite that simple . Your in the right place though to help you figure out a solution .
Are relays blocked?
Not yet. But as the entire country's internet get slowed down from time to time, so does relays connection too.
Use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and only connect to relays that have HSTS enabled (prevents anyone from proxying your connection).
I guess same practice will be useful as the ones people of Iran utilize to access blocked websites. Is Facebook banned there? Do people still use it?
Facebook has been banned for a very very long time.
What kind of resources are already translated into Persian/Farsi?
Not sure. Damus thinks farsi is Arabic :/ but a majority of people in Iran use android phones anyways.
For #Amethyst it's relatively easy to add translations. Everyone is invited to contribute. 🤙
I don't know much Persian (yet! Just a few basic phrases so far) but I'd be happy to help with the techy side of translating... right now translating Amethyst involves translation of about 350 mostly very short strings of text
The issue has been correctly moving the UI to right to left text. We need a coder with some Arabic reading capability to do it right.
I just did a test with switching to Arabic and it appears most UI elements automatically flipped layout, so 👍
When you use a farsi word among english is where it gets jumbled.

Also Arabic is different from Farsi/Persian😉
I can help with the language part of translation, if it already isn't coverd by google or gpt or sth.
But I'm clueless with the dev parts and tech aspects. You need to show me what to do.
In general there's a XML file (latest version here) that needs to be translated.
https://github.com/vitorpamplona/amethyst/blob/main/app/src/main/res/values/strings.xml
We already support some languages, e.g. Arabic
https://github.com/vitorpamplona/amethyst/blob/main/app/src/main/res/values-ar/strings.xml
From time to time, new variables get introduced that then need additional translations or they will show in english.
If you know git, you can send a PR, or just send the xml file to Vitor or me and we will add it.
Good background info to know... I see that Amethyst is already (partially) translated into Arabic, so it must support RTL text OK... insight on that nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z?
Nostr isn't blocked, yet.
Untill it gets more attention and popularity.
To make it there, you can start a Farsi club or something.
Use #Amethyst by Vitor Pamplona from http://f-droid.org/ . From #fdroid seems safer than going through centralised company like #google that can be served a warrant. Or get Andoid apk direct like for #Daisy but very dangerous if get wrong one:
Android

Amethyst also available directly via GitHub
Thank you for presenting this debate, real and necessary use cases of free protocols. To answer your question, I think we should work on these two options:
1 start involving more people from that place by teaching you how to use the different customers with the different options that are not yet restricted.
(Here they published options)
2 involve people with technical knowledge and developers in that country who can give impetus and support to the community by creating relays about networks such as Tor and others.
(Necessary when Nostr begins to be restricted)
It is a joint work of the entire community that wants to participate in #nostr from Iran.
I wrote a comment about safety and just then I ran out of yet another scrimpy and expensive internet package. So it probably didnt go through.
Here it is: IDK about the level of safety of nostr in regard to anonymity and traceability.
Given some of the things I posted before, I only hope they wouldnt bang on my doir one night and pull a sack over my head and send me to dungeons where no humanbieng ever comes back from. As they like to brag about it!
