I don’t think follow implies obedience at all. People even follow their enemies, it’s about keeping track of information.
Maybe obedience is the wrong word, but it certainly implies in unequal relationship, like leader/follower, shepherd/sheep, guru/disciple

i like subscribe. you don’t necessarily have to pay. plenty of people subscribe to free newsletters and updates from people and companies. subscribe to lists. subscribe to updates etc.
Subscribe is worse than follow. By a lot.
