For the last few years we’ve been growing these purple podded pole beans from Baker Creek Seeds. They are crisp, delicious, and absolutely prolific! So great for vertical gardening too. #growstr

I'm going to harvest some firebeans soon. How are you going to prepare yours?

I usually throw them into a stir fry but now that we are a family of four, we’re pretty good at eating them fresh when we’re outside in the garden.

My Thai mom makes a really nice green bean salad that is served over rice. This recipe is similar (I have a seafood allergy so I omit some ingredients and it tastes just fine): https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/som-thum-tua-thai-som-thum-style-green-beans

I love Baker Creek in concept (and of course their selection) but honestly the germination rate is not what I hoped.

Last season I repurchased my seeds from them thinking mine were too old (pushing 7 years) but nope…had equally as bad germination.

For example, my Toscana and Blue kale would be fairly prolific so we’re a variety of carrots and greens and zuc and watermelon…

But then barely anything and nothing has changed really on my end…soil just keeps getting healthier and healthier

Oh no! Our garden is small so we don’t need a high germination rate for it to fill up. I have noticed slow germination but not a low rate.

For the last few years I’ve been saving some of my own seeds. Each year the crops become better tailored to the specific conditions here.

Do you have other seed companies you like? I’ve been happy with Botanical Interests 🙂

I’ve not heard of Botantical Interests…I’ll have to look them up.

Sad to say the best germination rate I’ve had is via organic seeds from a big box store. Burpee seeds if I recall but organic.

I’ve been mining a bit more fiat than planned this year so I’m not sure I’ll have the bandwidth to clean up and plant a fall garden

Mines small too did a circularly key hole and oblong keyhole

I have 3-4 other “patches” I started but usually run out of time to plant

Honestly I should just carve out the time but have some other life priorities right now

Hey now, life happens! Your garden will always be waiting for you when you are ready 🙂 Cheers! 🍻
