Question for the #devs….

My daughter is entering electrical and computer engineering program and needs new device. She’s thinking between:

MS surface laptop studio 2 or Dell XPS 15

She likes the surface bc of the ability to take notes with the pen. But not sure if she’ll use it all the time. The HP is what we’re seeing being recommended.

Not HP. Delete….

Dell

What’s up?

What are the requirements for the machine - e.g. operating system, memory, storage, cpu, ram etc

We’re looking for the best option at ~$2k

windows os. processing speed fast. She’s unsure of specific req so we’re trying to get a good one now that will last 3+ yrs.

Have to be windows?

She prefers that since it’s most common in biz and her university program recommends it.

Gotcha. Highly recommend she learn linux as well. Its widely used across most industries but largely behind the scenes. Linux proficiency is a good way to set yourself apart from a technical sense.

And its better, imho. Free and opem source. Not running the Bill Gates malware.

Thank you. 😊 I mentioned this to her. She’s not sure if that’ll be part of the program yet. Maybe towards the latter part of it??

Linux is huge in a lot of the global companies! for the program they start on windows OS and how to apply to iOS. Not so much the open source first format.

If you have an idea of what applications need to be run at school, you can get an idea of how powerful the machine should be.

Asus makes the Dell machines. Take a look at Asus laptops.

In prior years intel had better chips than amd. Not sure the relationship now.

Choosing a SSD hard drive will keep things fast.

Good luck!

I used a lenovo thinkpad when I got my engineering degree. The notes are a nice to have but she'll want something sturdy to use for the workload.

Thank you Jackie boy!

I’m partial to the thinkpad myself. I know she had one and not sure why it’s not part of the considerations 🤷‍♀️

Its not as sexy as the dell and HP.

Spicy matters 🌶️ 😂

The pinto was a reliable vehicle but I'll be fucked if it wasn't ugly as sin

I think we’re going with a Lenovo!!

And reason wins the day, I'm proud of you both.
