I feel a sense of anxiety when I begin typing something into telegram or signal and then choose not to send the message because I know the other person has seen "hodlbod is typing".

I've only noticed this because when typing messages in Coracle that I then choose not to send I have a small moment of panic, then relief when I realize my conversation partner is none the wiser. Sometimes it's simpler to just not reply, and sending involuntary signals makes the act of communication more complex.

Are typing hints a dark pattern? Or are they a healthy analog of real-life communication (in imitation of e.g. body language)? Maybe the principle of designing social media experiences to "imitate real life" is flawed? Maybe new media shouldn't imitate life, because they are distinctly their own thing?

I hate typing hints. I think they're an addiction thing as well.

I can tell you I really don’t like the typing signal. I don’t think it serves a good purpose.

I know some people that have disabled the “message was read” indicator in signal. So when I message them I have no idea if they have received it. Took me a while getting used to it.

I see typing hints as helpful

i relate to this. its info or a signal i dont want to share.

writing and typing is slow, i type while i thik and thus slowly.

when realizing its not needed to message or you dont want to, by having thought more or further, it is not needed to have signalled "is typing"

or

"is typing" means more "is thinking about something or other that may be communicated about w you..."

not

"has something clear and thought throug to say to you"

in some apos this is a setting

and nobody missed or wanted the feature with sms

my 2cents

I think it's a way to give it more flair and make it feel real, like the body language thing. I mean, if you don't have anything to say, you could always just use 'okay' or 'cool,' except when a better response is required. Or simply let the person know you're busy if you're not free. Another thing is, it just gives you the feeling that the person is currently online, so the conversation might continue. Just my one cent. 😁

Typing dots in lieu of expressions.

I hate that tip-off. Neither do I like people looking over my shoulder when I type. I'll send the finished product when it's ready. That's why I like email. You get it when you get it.

Typing hints do the opposite of imitating life. Both parties are occupying different physical spaces & communicating through text. If I send a letter, I receive no signal whether the other party will be replying. I think that's why they cause anxiety. To me, they are nothing more another addictive tactic to keep the user in the app. Maybe they would be less yucky in livestream chats & similar things where users congregate at once.

You keep hitting good topics today. Sorry.😂

i agree, telegraphing you are typing is not actually useful information and is anxiety inducing for the sender

note that telegram at least you can disable it, my best buddy in bulgaria always disabled his, his replies would pop out of nowhere and i liked it, the more i experienced it, but i never switched mine

gonna do it now

wow, ok, i distinctly recall you could disable typing notification in the past but not anymore in telegram

haha lame

Well said. Interesting how something can appear to imitate reality, while simultaneously disrespecting it.

I think there is a benefit to making digital interactions feel more organic and intuitively similar to IRL interactions, but I don't think typing hints are a good example of that in action.

I don't feel anxious waiting to hear someone speak in a regular conversation, but I do if I see those bouncing dots in a digital conversation and then they stop bouncing, but I never received anything.

It's like if in IRL someone opened their mouth for like 5 seconds, then closed it again. It would never happen.

I hadn’t realized it until this conversation, but I self regulate. If the dots move for more than about 5 seconds I go do something else and wait for a ding. 🛎️

maybe you should reply more, people are waiting for your replies

You can deactivate typehints on signal. Highly recommended ..

Every communication channel is different, has its own purpose and scope. I don’t think full imitation/ substitution is possible or needed. I never thought of typing hints as a dark pattern as well. Tbh I always thought about this thing as a curiosity not as something that has impact on quality snd/or effectiveness of communication. But I also usually don’t sit and look at how someone is typing a reply to me. The only thing I’d say, when I do observe as someone is typing a reply to me, signals I get: longevity / time , interruptions in typing - that’s how I know whether a person actually puts real effort into verbalizing what he/she wants to tell me. Also I really like situations when someone is typing a reply for a longer time but then doesn’t send it. It’s the biggest signal possible if you think about it. not everything that is on somebody’s mind should be and needs to be communicated, for different reasons . so it means a person actually cares about the other person and puts effort in the process of communication , and in this particular situation a person re-considered and spared me something that I don’t need to know anyway . Generally speaking easiness of communicating and “sharing” although is generally a good thing and spread innovation and progress, had a negative impact as well - we don’t do cost/benefit analysis of what we about to say/share anymore 😀 bc it doesn’t cost anything now (paper, ink, electricity/candles 😀, cost and time of delivery) , as a result we post Everything 🤦‍♀️ . Last sentence doesn’t have anything to do with your question , apologies.

You can turn off last seen and read time (at least in Telegram)

Choosing to do this is itself an anxiety signal that is complex to interpret from the other end. Especially if they don't choose to do it themselves.

Yes it is a dark pattern. Very distracting
