People choose to live in lots of places, because of family, because of work, because of reasons that may not make sense to others. I’ve also had the benefit of living in other places but here’s where my roots are and the best I can do is be an advocate for changing the things that need to be changed.

Practically every reply I read on Nostr is from a personal basis with zero ability to see a broader view.

It’s quite shocking.

You can both be right. NYC is a concrete wasteland that smells like dog piss with too high taxes, fascist government, and vapid people.

It can also be an alphas playground, with amazing restaurants, amazing nightlife, the best of the best minds in the world, all competing to become the brightest in their respective fields, and an unmatched energy.

Most people who think they know about this city have only ever been here once or twice and stayed within a 10 minute cab ride of their hotel in Times Square. So essentially they know nothing.

All I said was that your reply was from a transient (outsider to NYC moving in) view and Manhattan-centric.

Am I wrong?

Then I proceeded to provide additional perspective.

Quite shocking you didn’t see this.

My “shocking” reply wasn’t to you.

Also, the vast majority of the people in Manhattan are outsiders moving in. OG residents are few and far between.

True, but you really only meet the more genuine people when you go to other neighborhoods further out. The immigrant communities are the best, they bring a whole lot more than any suburban transplant with a trust fund.

Drinking vodka at the Russian supper clubs in Brighton beach.

Eating Somali cuisine and talking about the Lightning Network in Harlem.

Fair enough.

There’s quite a few of “us” above 110th street.

I blame Bitlicense for this thread.

Repeal Bitlicense then I don’t have to defend that maybe my time living in Brooklyn, Roosevelt Island (look it up if not from there), Harlem, Washington Heights etc. as an additional data point.

I can't believe this thread is still going 😂

Have you ever lived or been to New York?

Think anyone saw my how-to note to pull up the secret menu in Cash App to send via lightning? 🤣

Absolutely not

You never even lived in Manhattan?

Harlem and Washington Heights are Manhattan.

Not really. Manhattan is 90th and below. It’s a completely different world up there compared to below 90th. Can maybe stretch to 110th (top of Central Park) but Harlem is Harlem.

You just showed that you don’t understand geography. Manhattan is the entire island and even includes Roosevelt Island and a small section in the Bronx. Harlem is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. I should know, as I live there.

Ok?

It’s vastly different up there, particularly as far as safety goes. (Though below 90th has gotten much worse since DeBlasio). Washington Heights is essentially an odd suburb of Manhattan (though safe) and they both take 45 minutes or longer to get there from east/west village.

It’s an entirely different world.

This is where I have to call bullshit, I’m sorry.

Manhattan is the landmass. Not what that office manager class deems it is.

Manhattan has a rich and diverse history that’s not going to have a demarcation line because there are fewer bistros.

Columbia University is on 116th.

Barnard as well.

Alexander Hamiltons house is up in inwood.

I have to draw the line there.

There’s an island. It’s manhattan island. It runs from South Ferry to 215th street.

Describing anything outside a specific zip code as “another world” is a very privileged viewpoint.

The whole city smells of piss and car exhaust fumes! It's not limited to just one borough. I wouldn't want to stay there for more than a week regardless of where I'm staying.

Lol. “Privileged.” Perhaps, perhaps.

Or I just worked my ass off to be “privileged.”

It’s funny how the BTC community is supposed to be more Laissez fare and independent but then often spout far left divisive commentary.

“Privileged.” 😆

Are you not privileged to be here early? What’s wrong with “privilege,” asides from using it as a cudgel to bash anyone with a modicum of success?

Meh, north of 90th is closer to queens than it is Manhattan.

Wow. This conversation is over.

You need a tour guide and a clue respectfully.

The politics are terrible here but not as bad as your understanding of the city.

One thing I couldn't get over when I visited was the firearms I own, if I moved to NYC, brought them with me, and got caught with them would land me in prison for 10 years per firearm. Here in Utah they are 100% legal.

Yeah it’s ridiculous.

Laws are different upstate so you have to avoid the city if you’re traveling from upstate to Long Island or Jersey. They don’t give a shit.

Careful bringing guns into New Jersey, if you live here you're not even allowed to have your gun locked in the trunk of your car unless you're going from a gun store to your home, or on the way to the range. You'll get into trouble otherwise.

Laws like that makes you a slave to your government and perfectly represents what those state politicians think of the citizens they are supposed to represent and be the voice for. No thank you!

Yes, there are reasons why having a lot of guns might make more sense in a state with an entire population less than half of the five boroughs. If that’s the life people want they should absolutely purse it wherever it’s easiest to do that. This is a large country full of many possibilities.

What's interesting is when I was in NYC I felt naked not being able to conceal carry. I felt I needed it more in NYC than anywhere else I have lived or visited in the United States. Some sketchy people in that city, especially on the subways at night. I could not imagine being a small female in NYC with limited resources for self protection because of insane politics.

Again, that’s a preference. I’ve never seen a gun discharged in the entire time I’ve lived here, except as a demonstration. It will be interesting to see what happens now that the state laws have been challenged by the Supreme Court.

Yeah, it’s rare to see a gun go off, that’s mainly in Brownsville and seriously rough areas. Though It’s not rare to see someone randomly punched in the face now. DeBlasio and Jeffrries really ruined the city.

The SCOTUS isn't challenging NY state gun laws, they ruled them illegal and unconstitutional. NY state isn't complying with the Bruen ruling. Those state officials should all be in jail, imo.

I understand the city very well. You’re just sad your part of the city is more Akin to queens than it is below 90th.

Get a map and a clue. Bye, chica. 👋

Funny, his grave is at Trinity Church in FiDi.

Guess even he didn’t want to identify with being that far north.

I didn’t list everywhere I lived.

Yes I have lived in Manhattan. I worked in Manhattan. I’ve had best friends in Manhattan.

I would refrain from being authoritative about things you don’t know.

Give me any street in Manhattan and I can tell you how to get there without an app. I’d say I’m pretty familiar with the area…

Plus the ratio of females to men is like 3:1 - not sure if that is true but a lot of New Yorkers did tell me that.

Not that good, but 60/40ish? SF is the flip of that.

Totally understand that and that's why I said live there "by choice". The things you mention like family, work, etc. would mean you lack the choice to live somewhere else.

Just know if you ever decide to move to another state your quality of life will massively improve, especially the fiat you get to keep in your wallet. I lived in SF for five years, highest state, county, and city income tax in the nation. When I moved to another state I was honestly shocked at how much more money I got to take home per paycheck. I was so accustom to the high taxes of SF I had the mentality everyone paid the tax rate I did. I was so wrong. Plus getting out of the city where there was so much crime, homelessness, and human suffering was so good for my mental health.
