I did 3 things that had a distinct positive impact on my life:

1. Tune out most news

2. Disable most notifications and zero on phone.

3. Stop consuming content daily and only focus on one or two things I really care about. Occasionally I’ll peek but very limited.

It’s amazing how much better I felt when my mind was not as busy. nostr:note1dxdsv2f0cffufefwg3de3ean4rzy20frh9cgh4shg2hmj37dw4zs2gvjyd

Yep. I haven’t watched tv for years (advertising and mainstream media is a shitcoin). I don’t even have the channels tuned in on it. Only watch the box for content on YouTube etc. not even Netflix anymore.

Same but do watch Netflix when I’m doing chores and usually on the phone. I couldn’t name a single current thing on tv if my life depended on it

💪🔥

Your saying not even have the channels tuned in on it reminded me that I don't have my car radio station reset after a battery change quite a few years ago and I don't miss it. Much quieter mind when driving.

So, no Nostr?

No. Nostr hasn’t really done anything for me other than allow me to work on what I like most. But… I did disable most notifications here so I guess in a way it IS doing something for me!

Stop consuming content daily?

No streaming media or podcasts?

I couldn’t do that.

I listen to audiobooks & podcasts all day.

Then mainly catching up on YT at night.

If I’m lucky, maybe sneak in some Halo.

Correct.

This is phenomenal advice. Now that I read it in your words I realize I did the same, though could do more of 2, especially unnecessary email.

I do a little bit of new on scientific discoveries but besides that nothing. News is mostly bad news anyway.

And focussing on nostr only. There's already to many other things to do with cooking, workouts, house, and family and frens 💜

Fuckin oath. <3

#1 did long time ago and it is such a nice improvement.

Will see how to do better #2 and #3 as it seems like I have a room for improvement there.

very true i should do the same

I ditched the news in 2015. That is to say I cancelled my subscriptions and stopped “turning on the news”. It’s been incredible.

It’s impossible not to hear/see things in the periphery but I can explore the subject matter further, only if I’m truly interested in it.

It wasn’t a grand rebellious statement. I didn’t want to be my gran, whose TV runs news every waking hour. I love her dearly, but she lives in a world where, after my grandfather died, she no longer thinks for herself or forms her own opinions. Every conversation literally starts with “you know, I don’t watch the news but…….(insert DREAD-du-jour)”.

I just didn’t like that all the news was negative despite seemingly so many great people doing great things. Eventually realized most of it is irrelevant to me. I don’t need to know what’s happening on the other side of the planet all the time. If it’s truly important, enough people close to me will talk about it and I’ll hear it from them. If I care, I’ll look.

It was the biggest positive impact on my overall outlook on life.

The less notifications in life, the better

Love this. Which notifications did you leave enabled?

Apples messages on desktop because I work on desktop and need to know if my wife messages me. Zero exceptions on the phone though.

This is great, thank you! 🤙 I’m going to do this today

What do you end up using your phone for? I'm trying to limit phone usage, but honestly I rarely use my cellphone as an actual phone and use it as a small computer.

This. Though I want to do less on the phone.

Make the phone the desktop & stop using it as a phone.

Install a 5g cellular modem in your desktop & use that as a cell phone, see how long you carry that around.

Dang that’s a bit extreme, not sure if I can do that but sounds way healthier

I would probably stop using the desktop then since I don't really use the text or calling.

Yea, I want to stop using my phone all together since I feel like I don't have much control over it and I carry it around way too much, making me way too accessible.

That’s what GrapheneOS can do for you.

1+2 I’m already doing. 3 I need to get better about.

Disabling notifications is such a cheat code. If I'm interested in an app e.g WhatsApp, Twitter, it isn't because of a notification. It is because I am interested at that point in time
