I ditched the news in 2015. That is to say I cancelled my subscriptions and stopped “turning on the news”. It’s been incredible.
It’s impossible not to hear/see things in the periphery but I can explore the subject matter further, only if I’m truly interested in it.
It wasn’t a grand rebellious statement. I didn’t want to be my gran, whose TV runs news every waking hour. I love her dearly, but she lives in a world where, after my grandfather died, she no longer thinks for herself or forms her own opinions. Every conversation literally starts with “you know, I don’t watch the news but…….(insert DREAD-du-jour)”.
I just didn’t like that all the news was negative despite seemingly so many great people doing great things. Eventually realized most of it is irrelevant to me. I don’t need to know what’s happening on the other side of the planet all the time. If it’s truly important, enough people close to me will talk about it and I’ll hear it from them. If I care, I’ll look.
It was the biggest positive impact on my overall outlook on life.
