Is there a Linux distribution out there which you can run from a USB stick, save data and also keep up to date on that same stick? If I remember correctly this is possible with Tails. Are there others?

Tails with persistence mode, but it's sort of the opposite of what it's intended for, honestly... Still a decent solution though. But I'd recommend you embrace more of the amnesiac mode and use an external USB drive for persistent data.
Thanks. Do you know other distros?
Any Arch on OpenBox maybe...
Oh, I'm an Arch fan. I ran it successfully for over two years on an older laptop I had a few years ago. Could resolve all occurring problems by spending uncountable numbers of hours in the Arch wiki and forums. Maybe I'm a little bit of a tinkerer 😁. Today I run a out-of-the-box solution.
If privacy isn't a main goal, as it usually is with tails, MX Linux is a good one to try. It's light for running on a wide variety of hardware, and has some usb tools built in.
Thanks. This sounds very interesting and I will check this one out. I ran MX Linux on my old laptop but didn't know they have a USB version.
Yes you can do all that with mx linux and more.
But why don't you install a distro on a stick? Instead of a typical hard drive, use a usb stick.
Very interesting. I will also have a look at this great recommendation. Thanks.
I even have freedombox installed on a usb stick...
Never heard about freedombox. Checking freedombox.org right now.
Yeah, if you wany any of these or all of these https://freedombox.org/apps/ then freedombox is convenient. You can do it with plain debian of course, freedombox use what already exists on debian, but as a pure blend (there are others too) it focuses on that.
MX is great for older hardware. It keeps my 11 year old MacBook useful 🤙
pretty much any. depends what you need. though from USB stick it can be slow.
try #Puppy #Linux
The good old Puppy Linux 😊. Always reliable and helped me sometimes out of some trouble. At the moment I take a dive into the whole MX Linux USB stick version. Thanks anyway for your reply.
Welcome, fren 🫂 Thanks for the #zap
Maybe you like to try BunsenLabs Linux, too, a fork of CrunchBang
Heard of that one but never put my hands on it. On the list to check out you go. 📝👌
I had used CrunchBang for a while on a productive but very limited hardware system as one of my first lightweight distros I ever tried. Really loved it.
BunsenLabs is actually Debian with some very few additional packages. Extremely slim.
