**The Umbrel Nostr Relay is now available**

Introducing Nostr Relay β€” an official app by Umbrel.

Connect your Nostr clients, such as Damus, Astral, and Amethyst, to your private relay for seamless backup of all your activity on Nostr. This ensures that your activity is not lost even if you are censored or blocked by public relays.

In Damus, go to Settings > Relays to add your Relay URL.

Tip: Install Tailscale on your Umbrel and your devices for an uninterrupted connection between your clients and your relay, even when you're away from your home network. Enable Tailscale's MagicDNS and use ws://umbrel:4848 as your Relay URL.

Nostr Relay is powered by the open source nostr-rs-relay project β€” a Rust implementation of Nostr relay. It currently supports the entire relay protocol, including NIP-01, NIP-02, NIP-03, NIP-05, NIP-09, NIP-11, NIP-12, NIP-15, NIP-16, NIP-20, NIP-22, NIP-26, NIP-28, and NIP-33.

Get those relays up boys!

How is it private if everybody see the list of your relays? Can anybody else connect to it? Or how does it work anyway?

Nobody else can connect to it. Tailscale is a private network that only you have access to.

If you use Tailscale, no one else would be able to connect to it.

No one can connect β€” it’s on your local network (you can use Tailscale to connect to own relay from outside of your home over an encrypted tunnel). Moreover Umbrel provides everyone with the same address for the relay if you connect over tailscale (ws://umbrel:4848), so it’s best to only connect that way

Am I correct, #[4] , or is there a better explanation?

So even though no one else can connect, they would be able to see that you are using Umbrel, right?

Got to try this. Looks very promising!

Remember plebs. Should keep nostr relay and Bitcoin node separate.

Even though I said yesterday that you should not do exactly this, with Tailscale, no one would be able to connect since it's a private VPN. I may update my stance on this now. I need some time to think about it.

Isn't the issue being more software risk exposure being on the same system than networking risk?

Thats what I was thinking

I have tried Tailscale myself and wasn't able to connect

Well, looks like my productivity is shot for today. #[0]

Great!! I'm setting up the relay rn

It’s not showing up for me in my Umbrel App Store. What did you do to get it to show up?

I just reloaded the page and browsed the app store to find it.

Weird I had to ssh in and run `sudo ~/umbrel/scripts/repo update`. All good now. Thanks homie

Do you know if this saves the entire event payload? Wondering what this means for my half full 1TB SSD

i assume it does so it can be re-broadcasted elsewhere.

with 3k events my relays database is 144mb.... this scales linear i think. do the math

yes!

Nice πŸ”₯

It is here but the GitHub is still private.
