I’ve had a lightning node on and off and it’s currently working but I’m having issues receiving and sending payments again. It’s not clear to me how to fix it. Any suggestions? I get routing failed errors. Do I need more sats in reserve? What amount? Why do UIs not make it clear what to do?

Hard to tell without more details.
How many channels do you have? Do you have inbound capacity?
Routing is generally an issue of the nodes between you and your counterparty not having the liquidity to make the payment. Channel analysis tools help to pick the best peers to open channels with. Autopilot on LND is a good feature. But, it's all about picking peers who keep their channels balanced well for their routing needs.
I haven’t done any channel balancing. Maybe that’s the issue 🤔
I don’t know how 😅
It doesn't need you to balance nothing if you have outbound liquidity.
That only matters if you are routing other People's payments (like you hope your peers will do). But since you can't see their peer channels, it's impossible to know outside of asking them or your payment failing.
We need a little more info, maybe the amount of channels and how much ppm are you setting in the payment, normally that's the main issue.
Is your node connected to mine, by a chance? If so, and if it’s the one I suspect, it is down now
I feel your pain, I see you!

drain it more so you are ~50 / 50 inbound and outbound. that helped me a lot
What software is that
It works alright for me. Did you try to watch the nostr:nprofile1qqspnzgrfett3asxcuj0gksje6z2zxzpvgd27uvz58m9vsuqh8zzw6cpr9mhxw309a382emdv9hzumt8w4ujumn9wsargwp58qq3vamnwvaz7tmzv46xztnwdaehgunfdshxxctdqydhwumn8ghj7en9v4j8xtnwdaehgu3wvfskuep0w3hku7gpewmsc tutorials?

- Gotta have both good inbound peers and good outbound peers with a good amount of channel liquidity to keep thing flowing well.
- make sure if the channel gets lopsided to loop in more sats or submarine swap some out to keep it even
- Keep the channel fees as low as feasibly possible so that routing becomes cheap and fast.
- the bigger the channel the better 🤙
