Feeling kind of conflicted about the prospect of relays deleting old content. On one hand, that's kinda how Mastodon handles old stuff in order to keep storage requirements down, on the other hand, Nostr is supposed to be immutable, and if it's just like Mastodon, and only keeps your data if you pay

Well, friend-o, I'm paying for a Mastodon server, so what would then be the difference?

Is Nostr destined to fall in-line with ActivityPub

It's always been the case that if you want your data preserved, you have to do it yourself. So far, my .json backup file is small.

I kind of like the free relays deleting old events. Especially if they keep the contact list and mutes and profile stuff.

If you want a long history pay for a relay that retains the data.

Since when was someone really better off by a very old tweet of theirs being surfaced?

😒

It’s not so much about resurfacing old embarrassing stuff but just that, sometimes I write stuff I’d like to keep haha but maybe I should look at hosting a relay

Oh and the Snort relay already deletes old content if you’re not a Snort subscriber. Not sure if you knew that.

I’ve always viewed Nostr as uncensorable, not eternal. I think it’s reasonable for devs to ask for some sats if people expect posts to last a long time.

Isn't there a hack that can make a google drive a private nostr relay? You could then keep a copy of your notes for free and re-broadcast when you want to share again?
