Likes are a nice dopamine hit, but hard money is the real indicator.

Social media platforms brought about a new form of interaction and feedback - likes. However, the use of likes as a measure of value has its limitations, as they are often not indicative of the true value of the content being shared. This is where the value for value economy comes in, offering a better alternative to likes.

With Nostr's value for value economy, users are encouraged to Zap notes and content they appreciate, rather than simply giving a like or a share. This not only provides a direct exchange of value, but also encourages creators to produce higher quality content, knowing that they will be rewarded with bitcoin for their efforts. Zapping allows users to directly contribute to a creator's success, while also providing them with a more meaningful way to engage with the content they enjoy.

By shifting towards a value for value economy, we can create a more sustainable and rewarding ecosystem for all users. So, the next time you come across content on Nostr that you enjoy, consider Zapping the creator to show your support and help them continue creating great content for all Nostriches to enjoy.

This experience will only get better too, once more Nostr clients and additional Lightning wallets support Nostr Wallet Connect, allowing users to one-tap Zap. We are early.

I like this.

It pushes users right into the #Bitcoin rabbit hole by teaching them how to use it too.

👏

Like: I like this note.

Zap: I *value* this note.

These are inherently different things and are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

How are they different?

If zaps are how content is valued then that gives the rich inordinate power over valuing things. How am I supposed to tell if one rich person likes a post enough to zap it 1m sats or 1000 people liked it enough to zap 100 sats? Well I suppose I'll just have to read the post and decide for myself if it has any value, in which case the zaps are pretty much meaningless to the reader.

Likes aren't much better, but at least I know that they are only one user per like. I think I'd be more interested in a post that has 1k likes than one that has 1m sats because I can tell the one with the likes has a broad appeal.

Sure it costs nothing to like a post, but it also costs nothing to receive a like. You all talk about how likes give dopamine and are addictive, but ignore the fact that receiving zaps is probably a 10 times higher release of dopamine.

I get your point. Though, some clients allow you to see exactly how much and who each Zapper is on a note. Our reputation is our identity. We'll see who's doing what.

Additionally, likes are infinite on Nostr. It's up to clients to limit one like per npub. I can like the same note on Nostr and Amethyst and up the like count by 2.

Well you can also zap yourself from another account you created. It's almost like both are meaningless!

For those without any bitcoin to zap, they can provide a comment. Comments contribute to the discussion. High quality comments will receive zaps from those who find them valuable.

This allows those who have no bitcoin, to receive bitcoin through their own efforts and engagement.

Maybe someone has a large following, but limited time. Reposting helps spread valuable content far and wide, increasing its chance of receiving valuable comments or zaps.

Quote posting allows individuals to add their own personal view to another’s post, widening perspective or providing affirmation, as well as increasing the original content’s visibility.

Participation is the new algorithm.

that was really helpful. thanks!

See my comment note with the link to Leah Perlam's interview. Likes were implemented also to solve the redundant comments problem.

Both likes and zaps are dopamine hits.

But zaps are stronger activating rewards centers connected to money, which is for example also where coke hits.

I'm convinced there's no good in deleting likes and that it will mean less engagement and, for outsiders already not on Nostr it will mean it's "an app where you pay to interact".

Nostr growing means also 100s of millions of poor people living at $1/day. They should be allowed to engage with notes if they don't want to zap or comment.

More, if they comment, they'll just leave a comment with a 💜 which is exactly one problem likes solved, one of the reasons they where implemented! 🙂

Also it should be an option if you want or not to use a bitcoin wallet to interact with Nostr notes. Make them want it but don't force it.

Likes are already deeply rooted in internet culture. You're fighting psychology.

So yes. I think #zapsonly are wrong.

Agreed. 🤙

I def agree. V4V has a bright future

I would also say that time is another indicator of value exchange. Arguably more valuable than bitcoin in some cases. Sats also have the issue of relative 'value' to both the donor and receiver, ie a billionaire receiver may not value a 10k zap but the donor sees it as a reasonable sum of money. Does this mean the post is less valuable?

On the other hand time is more or less the same for all of us.

A well thought out response indicates the person has spent time on engaging and this is also very valuable. I love sats but feel like an artist for example might value someone really admiring and discussing their work versus a 20 dollar donation in the box. Not a hard and fast rule, just a consideration

Just my 2 sats
