Trigger warning ⚠️

Mute lists in onboarding. Curious to hear constructive thoughts 💭

Couple of notes before people send me death threats:

1. As client dev you could modify the lists to your liking. Or ignore it.

2. This is meant only to clean up feeds not censor. Users should have full control over editing the lists (in onboarding and in settings).

3. Categories here are placeholders. I don’t know what all should be considered or not, up to individual client.

You shouldn't really need to add a trigger warning here...I mean, technically it's bound to infuriate someone who has zero emotional control when presented with things they don't like, but that just keeps things entertaining

Agreed, everyone wants nostr go be mainstream but then get annoyed when someone asks for a NSFW filter, some of us go out in public 😂

I know you can still do this on your own but it’s a useful feature on startup, especially for people who don’t care for that content at all

Why kill the fun ser .. I’m dressing as a juicy steak walking into the lions den, I may as well have fun getting eaten alive 😂

Well...you know what you're getting yourself in to 🤣😂👍

Could also decouple crypto and bitcoin since we have many bitcoiners coming here. Make it easy to leave bitcoin untouched.

Yes, putting bitcoin and "crypto" in the same category is in bad taste

To bitcoiners yes. That’s why I said we can decouple the 2 in follow-up comment. It’s all about usability.

Yeah, for now most people lump them in to the same category. Granularity is probably best

Developers would have ultimate say. This is just an example.

options should be given ONLY at the client side to chose by each user based on their preference - NEVER on relay-server

That’s what this is.

There would literally be nothing left in this image example ;)

I think muting bitcoin & crypto (or separate as some comments suggested) would be the most useful and address a major complaint. I wonder what this filter would include? 'stack sats' 'zap' 'stay humble' etc? Is there some sort of ability to mute bitcoin image memes too?

Curious

It’s up to developer to determine what to include in each list and user can modify at any point.

Ah yes I see.

I think word filters that I can input manually would be my personal preference, but I can see the merit in this idea.

There’s an input for custom word there. But you could also edit the list (just didn’t design this)

Muting is completely fine and wanted as long as it is 100% transparent and in full control of the user.

However, I recommend to split Bitcoin and Crypto.

Agree. In hindsight I’d make them separate. This is just an example. Dev can do whatever they please.

Understood. I like it, good job 👏

I agree

Bitcoin & Crypto shouldn’t be in the same category.

Can each groups words be edited for each filter? I mean, some of the categories seem subjective.

Yes. Edit individually if you like. Categories are examples like i said. Up to dev to define categories.

Great idea but still hard to bootstrap since if enable "Bitcoin" mutelist you might get a dead feed which is not an ideal first UX. Chicken and egg problem though

There's actually a lot of other content on here, now.

There is but not in a "constant flow" kind of way. Because most people have the attention span of a goldfish and a constant craving for a new dopamine hit, that kind of kills the deal.

I’ve muted bitcoin and still see plenty of content.

You mean just the word "bitcoin"? I was thinking of something smarter that associated everything related to bitcoin even if it did not explicitly contain that word.

Just basic bitcoin terms, plebs, hodl etc

Having someone else curate your feed is the same as volunteering for a lobotomy.

If you don’t like raw information, then you are exactly the type of person who can’t handle the truth.

The truth is ugly and scary and confusing.

Knowing the truth is a sign of courage, not intelligence. Most intelligent people choose to swim in mass-delusion, because they lack courage.

If you want to live in a sanctuary, that’s OK. But know you are pretending to know anything about the world.

That is to say, I would expect a majority of people to opt for the lobotomy, few have courage.

🙋‍♀️😂

What’s your point?

I just wish we could coach people to be braver.

How can we fix things if people choose ignorance?

I don’t see what muting hate speech has to do with choosing ignorance 🤷‍♂️

It’s more likely the people on the receiving end of such shit are least ignorant and just want to not deal with it again.

I’m a white male who never has to deal with bs other people must put up with.

Even if they are perfectly capable of muting assholes, you still have to hear it first - and why, when you don’t have to?

I simply like mute. It’s in my control and I like that. I read/listen first then mute later. I am my own algorithm if that makes sense?

Couldn't disagree more. Maybe you have a lot of free time on your hands but I don't want to spend 99% of mine combing through "raw information".

Human time is the scarcest resource. Delegating curation is just being pragmatic. The key here is the word "voluntary": you are alwayd free to disable it, delegate to someone else or do it yourself.

Agreed. 100% transparency and full user control is key.

You can be at the opposite end of the spectrum to me, that’s OK.

I decided to follow a bunch of people and thus curated my own feed.

It seems you have done the same? But you would delegate this if you had to do it again?

You would prefer someone else to point your eyeballs for you?

I would not see any value at all in my feed if it was curated by someone else. If I’m going to spend 1 hour looking at it, I’m going to spend 10 minutes of that time at the end curating / improving it to better serve my self interests for next time I look at it.

I can’t imagine having someone else deciding what is important / valuable for my attention.
