It ain’t the prettiest part of our homestead but this chicken run brings me so much joy.

It’s about 12-16 inches deep of weeds, leaves, prunings, biochar, and veggie scraps that the chickens eat and are entertained by all day long.

This area used to flood from neighboring properties upstream but now the run soaks it all up.

We get about 25 gallons of sifted compost from each 5 ft/sq or so

Wow. #goals

Utilizing decaying matter to attract bugs as a food source for chickens is indeed a smart and resourceful approach to feeding them.

A couple of scoops into it with the pitchfork and the chickens are immediately all over it looking for worms and bugs

I preach this system every time I can. Let the chickens give you eggs while turning the compost for you! I've NEVER turned a pike of compost :)

Nice. I have been surprised how much compost I got over the winter with my first 8 hens. I used mostly other peoples 'trash' leaves they bagged up and restaurant trash for food. Trash converted to eggs and compost. 😀 I will be piling most of this material into Johnson-su inspired bioreactors.

I will be building a run this spring on a hill where I add carbon and food at the top then the chickens move it downhill.

It has its own beauty, it's so full of LIFE!!!
