Zaps continue to grow on Nostr, but we're still incredibly early.
Zap senders vs Zap receivers is an interesting metric. It looks like we have only about 8,000 people that are sending Zaps and only about 6,000 people are that receiving them.

Are these numbers validated ZAPs?
I’m finding a lot of ZAPs fail validation checks. Not necessarily spam or fake.. validation just have 4 points of easy failure.
I am guessing that a lot of lightning addresses are not set up yet to send zap notes back to nostr. So that would probably account for the discrepancy between sent/received.
It wasn't until just recently that I got my own lightning address set up to sent zap notes to Nostr upon receipt, I know that.
This. Not all wallets support Zaps, though we're getting more added all of the time.
Ya, personally using Ligess for my lightning address and they have a pull request I had to fetch to add zap support. Still early and hasn't been fully released yet. Working great though. Lots more support for zaps to come hopefully!
I maybe now why, days ago I did an experiment, and not everyone who zapped me can be seen in the zap pool. The only reason is that some client they have the lightning button but actually didn’t support zap kind, that’s fake zap.
Just one of the reasons I guess.

So 2000 people are either zapping themselves 😂 or probably more realistically are people who don’t have zap-enabled receiving wallets

It simply means that some people zapped, but never got zapped back. 🫤

It could mean multiple things, including what you said. Any lightning wallet can pay a zap invoice. Only NIP-57 wallets can return the zap note that tells Nostr it was paid. So there could be 10000 zap receivers but 4000 use wallets that don’t support zaps and those paid invoices wouldn’t be registered as zaps on Nostr because their wallet doesn’t publish a zap note upon payment.

This is also a weird kind of quantum entanglement - by posting a graph of zap evolution you attract zaps due to your outstanding journalistic contribution, thereby affecting the very numbers you are trying to present. Myself included in the zap count
