I've had the Pine and Librem phones. Unfortunately neither are anywhere close to a GrapheneOS Pixel.
It probably never will be. Centralized control has some benefits, even if it's uncomfortable to admit. Open things will likely always be jankier. To the extent it isn't, someone probably added a centralized layer or product on top (like Google adding proprietary stuff on top of AOSP or Chromium).

They already exist. For what more phones?
Good attempts have been made but it's quite difficult, especially considering what most people expect now. New phone releases simply won't live up to those made by producers with a lot more experience, resources, and IP.
The best concept I can imagine is a custom GNU/Linux OS with an Android compatibility layer. But even that won't be as smooth as what many demand. That's the only way I see to make a phone without being beholden to Apple and Google decisions. Purism had a good concept but it ended up being a disaster. Pine64 has a developer phone but the hardware has low specs (meant for devs).

Running graphene OS on a pixel is a great start
I did this over 5 yrs ago, it’s good for privacy but I found it annoying that you couldn’t have regular apps like normal phones. Maybes that’s changed now, I may look into getting another graphene OS phone
I can use just about any app. I'm not sure I've had any issues with any because of graphene. Being a DeGoogled phone, I naturally don't use Google applications.
Honestly, like it so much, I may go with a tablet version as well as another phone.
