I'm using the Gossip client that was on the Nostr main website, still getting used to all of this and had a few questions:

1. It seems like posts can have some kind of "reward" thing? Looks like an emoji reaction. Can anyone explain to me how those work?

2. What format does my profile picture link need to be in? Can't seem to get that working. I uploaded it on nostr.build.

3. This is likely a stupid question, but is there any way, or going to be any way, that you can filter and view the messages flowing through a given relay? I guess I'm imagining a relay that was meant for a specific topic... really, that sounds a lot like a hash tag, now that I think about it. Anyway, yeah, is there a way to follow tags?

4. Any other random tips and tricks anyone is willing to offer?

1. You can add zaps to earn and send bitcoin.

2. Unsure, I use Damus and it was pretty seamless

3. Yes, you can follow hashtags. Some clients have search functions as well.

4. Follow people and you’ll find cool people.

Oh you went straight to hardcore nostr.

1. It seems you are talking about zaps. ⚡️ this is typically a lightning address to receive Bitcoin.

2. Almost all formats work. I have seen .gif .jpg both should work fine.

3. I’m sure those exist, but not very common. Hopefully someone can add more to this. #asknostr and yes you can follow tags, not sure if that’s doable on gossip, but most clients offer this.

4. Start with a more mature simpler client. Gossip is amazing still needs some time to evolve.

Hahaha, after seeing a few other examples of clients, I see now what you mean about hardcore nostr...

Reactions can be as simple as a "+" message which most clients read as a 'like', clients also choose to use other reactions (damus on iOS defaults to 🤙), try out the other clients too 🥳

Profile pictures can be hotlinks to images. All sorts of extensions work, even animated GIFs! Use a public image host or host your own

Consider setting up your lnurl/lightning address and you can get zapped ⚡ too!

Use hashtags as you would on other apps

nostrudel.ninja is a great client, kinda the swiss army knife of desktop clients. i recommend trying it out

Yo wtf set up your lightning wallet. I cant zap you

I don't know how yet :(

Use a square GIF or JPEG and keep the size under 400kb. nostr:npub1nxy4qpqnld6kmpphjykvx2lqwvxmuxluddwjamm4nc29ds3elyzsm5avr7 has a profile pic optimizer.

you will learn about zaps soon enough, lot to digest...but to be able to receive them ( and you can later on figure out how to redeem by talking to most people on here) starting right now, you can put @npub.cash in the 'ln address' field of your profile.

in your case that would be:

npub1rc8mqg42fssvsmrnz0nsajvtru8ytt5q2k44xz6jc8wxa3l8h4nqjcer0w@npub.cash

send a post once youve successfully added and we will all show you some love :)

cheers and welcome to nostr!

Did you started with Gossip? Oh man 🫂

Try https://coracle.social if you want to to be able to browse by relay.

And try many other clients, interoperability it's a Nostr gem. Just make sure to check they are trusted sources, and always use a Nostr extension on the web. Later you will learn about NIP-46 to better manage your nsec.

You have already been informed about zaps.

Welcome down the rabbit hole!

Thanks for all the info!

About #3, you have no idea just how far this rabbit hole goes.

Gossip is more of a bare-bones interface originally designed to prove out a particular type of protocol. I recommend using Amethyst on android, Damus on ios, and coracle.social and snort.social on desktop (browser).

Relays could theoretically end up being topic or region or language specific, but at this time they are for the most part general purpose. Some relays offer spam filtering, others offer specific services related to "the inbox model" (originally proposed by the guy that wrote gossip) which isn't something you should have to worry about when getting started.

Most of your mainstream clients (mentioned above) offer a button to upload a photo, but ultimately they end up sending them to places like nostr.build and copying the resultant url into your nostr profile metadata.
