Have you seen the ad Coinbase made for the UK? I've just seen it and it's quite remarkable. Also apparently it was banned on UK TV networks?! That is somehow even more interesting.

Who gets to ban ads over what? That sounds implausible.

I agree it's dubious, but first, there is such a thing as the advertising standards authority (at least there used to be, years ago) and plenty of ads get censored or banned. Second, it's Brian Armstrong himself I'm getting this from:

, but I don't know if there are any other sources. To me it's not totally implausible but I agree it shouldn't be taken as anwhere near fact without something more solid.

Sounds like a trivial thing but with the ad not inviting people to buy crypto, a disclaimer would be awkward, too.

Ah cool, thanks for finding it. A curious case indeed, which is less surprising considering how completely out of the ordinary this ad is.

Coinbase wanted this to happen, so they could generate publicity via this "ban" narrative

If they really want to see it on national TV, they should just produce one with the obligatory disclaimer. If not, they probably didn't want this to begin with.

My guess is that more people have seen it thanks to this "ban" then would have seen it otherwise

And, if Coinbase thinks I'm wrong, they're still free to edit the disclaimer in and get it on TV anyway

more people maybe but certainly different people than on TV. And the ad is aimed at no-coiners I would say.

Fair point. Indeed, it's a bit strange that they didn't do that to begin with. Something is not quite right in the story, it's murky.

I would say I hate coinbase but after this ad… I don’t hate them any more. I still definitely don’t trust them but damn. What an ad!
