I think people glaze over the centuries ago. Family ties were important and connections. You still see the same in poverty stricken countries. But it was not common to have a lot of kids at home and be able to feed them all and have a a happy family. You most likely would send one of your sons to a uncle or close relative for him to learn a skill and he would live there for some time. Maybe your older sister was recently married and you would go and support her and help her since btw you drove her by horse to work and your school and her house was closer. Steaks were eaten once a year on Christmas. This all recollections from my grandfather. If you brought 2 friends to play cards at home your mom would tell you that you couldn’t do that again because you guys are all the cured meat that she was saving for winter.
