For those of you waiting with bated breath to find out how the fly swatting caper went... The boy got 10 flies the first day, with no additional kills in the following days.

I inquired about this and received a rather snippy answer about how there were no more flies in the house. I pointed out the flys actively flying around us while we had that conversation. "There's no more flies in my section of the house!"

Turns out those first few flies were also the ones that bothered him while he was playing with the VR headset. The call of the video game was stronger than the call of the dollar. I cannot relate as I was a lil hustler at a young age just because I love to spend money 🤣 He could have easily gotten a lot more but I wasn't going to push it.

The thing to watch out for here is the classic "perverse incentives" problem in economics, which in this case would be he lets in a bunch of flies so he can then swat them and earn more money than he would otherwise.

Although that seems to not be the case here... apparently he's not looking for ways to "game" the system... 😅

Honestly, I wouldn't be angry if he did try to game the system it's part of learning to be successful in our society! 🤣🤑🤣

When I was little we often had these types of games set for us, and we'd get bonuses for gaming the system. The only time we'd get punished is if we got caught by a person from outside the family.

This kid could have picked up an extra $20 just from the windowsills but nah, why bother I guess? Can't relate. But whatever there are many less flies now and the screens are fixed so all's well that ends well!

creating problems to get credit to solve them is called the cobra effect.

it's the daily business of politicians.

It's a good strategy for getting what you want, but then again I was raised in the D.C. metro area so maybe it's been normalized to me 🤷‍♀️

not surprising since that's exactly what most jobs in DC are about

How do I breed flies? 😉

I would kill flies for a dollar each! That's good money.

When I was a kid, my mom paid us to rake leaves by how many we bagged. We got a quarter a bag. My other friends were getting $15 bucks to do their whole yard. My mom got her yard raked for about a $1.50. She was so cheap. Once she said she would pay us a penny for every sign we read while she was driving because my sister and I were learning to read. In the first trip, I earned more than hundred pennies. She said never mind, this game is too expensive for her. She never paid up.
