I acquired an electric fly swatter and have written up a contract with a bounty of $1 per fly payable in 3 days at GameStop to the boy child.

"Wait if I kill a hundred flies I can spend $100 at GameStop?" Correct little man.

Any guesses how many dead flies he can collect in three days? Will the VR headset suck him back in and prevent any earnings? I will report on the results this weekend.

India tried this with snakes. People started breeding snakes. Next time you leave the house you might come home to the doors and windows open haha

The doors and windows are open most of the time anyways, hence the current fly situation. He was very excited for maybe two minutes but has already gone back to video games. I think I won't have to pay all that much 😅

Meanwhile if I had offered it to the little version of me, I'd murder all the flies inside and outside in addition to picking the already dead flies off the fly traps to maximize my profits. But I don't think he's been studying the Rules of Acquisition enough to be on that level.

So much to learn.

I'm trying my best to teach him 🤣

Rule of acquisition 34: [Waging] war [against flies] is good for business.

💯

Uhhh I can't condone this but hell yeah GameStop? 💀🤣

Should I not incentive large scale extermination? 💀🤣

😅 I would try to identify a better long-term solution

I'm installing one of those magnetic screen doors and repairing some of the window screens today so that should help long term. Three days of maniac fly murder should take care of the short term problem 😅

I'm going to steal this idea

Desperate times call for desperate measures 🤣

Sounds like you also have video game infestation

unfortunately 😅

the average game costs around $60-70, so that's at least 20 flies per day. Unless there are other things to buy at GS? I haven't been in a while.

Good hunting to your little hunter. Hope he keeps his eye on the prize.

He likes those little themed tchotchkes they sell there too. But if it's looking like a meager haul maybe I'll just pay him off 😅

For those of you waiting with bated breath to find out how the fly swatting caper went... The boy got 10 flies the first day, with no additional kills in the following days.

I inquired about this and received a rather snippy answer about how there were no more flies in the house. I pointed out the flys actively flying around us while we had that conversation. "There's no more flies in my section of the house!"

Turns out those first few flies were also the ones that bothered him while he was playing with the VR headset. The call of the video game was stronger than the call of the dollar. I cannot relate as I was a lil hustler at a young age just because I love to spend money 🤣 He could have easily gotten a lot more but I wasn't going to push it.

The thing to watch out for here is the classic "perverse incentives" problem in economics, which in this case would be he lets in a bunch of flies so he can then swat them and earn more money than he would otherwise.

Although that seems to not be the case here... apparently he's not looking for ways to "game" the system... 😅

Hi, Kip. So I'm just getting around to reading this now, and I believe your approach is actually brilliant, though it didn't work out the greatest this time around.

I wish I had been using this approach when my kids were younger. I did however learn to use it later in life. I think that peace work is actually the most equitable and most motivating way to approach any employer employee type task or situation.

Had the boy child not been distracted by the VR game, the motivation factor would have enabled him to do the task and to excel at it far better than anything else.

In particular, far better than paying him by the hour or by the whole job.

So, despite the spare results, please don't give up that approach. Peace work is the way to go.😃

I grew up playing games of acquisition and it was wild how much ground work is needed for it to be fun, like I was expecting him to negotiate a better wage and he just had no concept. It's my friend's kid so I don't want to indoctrinate him too much into ruthless capitalism but I'm hoping some small doses will help him out in the long run 😅

Did you learn those from Deep Space Nine?🤔🧐😆

IMNSHO, "ruthless capitalism" is simply statism relabled to throw us off the trail of the real culprits...

The Austrian Economists are the mists I prefer breathing...😃

Yes of course we loved all the Star Trek shows but I think Deep Space Nine is objectively the best 😅

My uncle was the union leader for Bell Atlantic and didn't have kids but did have money and a passion for teaching us to demand higher wages and how to accumulate wealth so that we could do what we wanted in a world that runs on wealth. Looking back it was a lot of good lessons in a fun way 🤑
