Do you use DMs on nostr?

#asknostr

If yes, what do you use them for?

If no, why not?

I recently had a missing message on contacting someone for our next meetup... hurtss ๐Ÿ˜…

Which apps were involved?

Nostrudel and also primal some time ago

A while back, someone's keys were leaked and shared publicly here (they were aware of this and moved to new keys) . I was curious and opened Amethyst with them and was able to view their old DMs.

It was because of this experience that while I use DMs on nostr, I am very conscious of what I use them for and what information I share in them. Should my keys ever be leaked, it will all be visible to anyone...

That person came back under a new npub and I muted them immediately. You donโ€™t get to do that and stay on my good side.

Yeah...

Everyone should be careful what they share in DMs. The risk isn't solely in your keys being compromised, but in anyone you've messaged having their keys compromised.

DMs (especially when promoted as secure or encrypted) sound safe, but that is only so long as the keys on either end are secure.

Saw a few DMs where people were talking about meeting or their locations. I'd strongly recommend not transmitting that information over nostr, even if by "encrypted" DM.

Still more worrisome is people sharing their addresses via DM when buying things on nostr.

Yes, no one should do this!

Only if I already know the person and have met. Others I don't because of the number of scam/spam messages I had received.

This is great feedback. I see the โ€œno DMsโ€ policy on many nostr profiles.

Yes, I don't use it much, more to inform about things that I think may be important in a more direct way and even to avoid causing harm, although I also use it to clarify doubts.

But sometimes someone comes to talk to me in DM and I don't see it, because in Amethyst the messages are mixed with the public chats in the main tab and new messages can only be in the new requests tab.

Negative

Oh, why? Seems like messages get lost all the time

I have not used legacy dm anymore

for as long as i can remember, dms have been the main vehicle for spammers and scammers on every social platform. that's why it has such a bad reputation. they became a breeding ground for scam and spam, and most ppl instinctively avoid them.

I mostly use them to read Helloโ€™s from scammers.

Once I had some conversation over DM with someone I know from Nostr. This was the only way and I think proper way to communicate.

I bought my nostr shirt via dm!

Hitting on your mom.

Not so much, because NIP-17 DMs still aren't supported well enough...

Trying to do my part though, just submitted a PR for NIP-17 for nostr:npub1phpdev2d38u5hzs4jrsh360mevh0rjctu9669quy97wu23u8sqdqpfha0j

Yes. I use DMs only when I recognize an npub requires discretion, privacy, or similar circumstances. Otherwise, most communications are on my timeline, or in theirs.

Yes. I use them because some conversations don't need everyone's or anyone's interjections, or to interact with services like checking .wine relay balances and logging into nostrbuild on occasion. I also send myself stuff to reference later. There is the occasional personal info swap but not often. Those conversations most often move off of nostr.

I generally only use DMs to tell someone to contact me in a different fashion.

Yes, I use them to discuss topics further outside of the public domain.

I also encourage friends to use NOSTR chat clients like nostr:npub1tm99pgz2lth724jeld6gzz6zv48zy6xp4n9xu5uqrwvx9km54qaqkkxn72 for gift wrapped DMs as we control the keys, not a centralised billionaire.

Quite often lately

For what purpose?

To buy things usually, or to move to another messaging platform.

I use Nostr DMs a lot, actually.

It's mostly done for topics outside the public domain, as explained before.

I do but try to avoid as they work 13% of the time

Maybe the specs are fine but we're all terrible programmers

No I don't use DMs. I've never needed it in the 2 months that I have this beautiful social network. Do you use them?

Mostly for support

share my signal link

sometimes but not frequently.

I use them, primarily to coordinate further communication on a different platform like Signal.

Have been working on https://n17.chat/ - a NIP-17 DM client. It's a work-in-progress and can only be used in combination with a NIP-07 compatible browser extension for now.

I gave up. Either it works, but is not encrypted - or it doesn't work for me, in which case I just give up and fall back to "tools of the old world".

Frequently. Only answer ppl I know and sometimes to sending my QR of Simplex chat for connecting there.

I wanted to say rarely instead of frequently. I used wrong word ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
