I shouldnt have to pay to post content. Does FB make me pay to post? Does IG? Does TW? Reddit? And if you think people should pay for posting content on social media, kindly look at the stats for nostr, then point out where they do that at, thats actually successful...

I've looked. Its NOWHERE.

This pay to play on nostr, has gotta end. Like we appreciate the time and effort devs put in, but...

Imo, this kinda stuff is why normies went to #threads, not #nostr...

I can't even upload a video of my cat, growroom, etc without paying to do so, or spending time figuring out how to make the file size smaller.

You pay FB, IG, and TW with your private information, which they sell to advertisers. Nothing is free.

Compress your videos, or host them yourself. It's not difficult.

I joined nostr, FOR FREE....

WHY PAY TWICE?

Or use more of my time?

Normies will ALWAYS choose convenience over privacy.

No they don't. They don't collect location, payment, contact, health data etc, and then sell it to advertisers. Facebook, Twitter, etc do. It's literally their business 😂

So, relays may not have that kind of todays sellable data, but they do have data that might be sellable later on...

Because once again, us users are the product.

For us to buy the products and services the devs are making, and charging us for, like to actually post larger files or go live as some examples...

It boggles my mind when folks ask why nostr hasn't won yet...

To me it's pretty obvious,

Nostr is pay to play.

And you have to use bitcoin.

I can't even pay for things in useless fiat, devs want my hard earned limited supply one of a kind bitcoin for services that are basic and standard other places like...

For me to stream live...

For me to post larger file content...

For me to let a relay store/broadcast my thoughts & ideas (data)

Etc

There has to be a better way for socials to remain free, obtain value from its users to maintain/expand services, while also not sacrificing user privacy or data....

I think we just fundamentally disagree.

I actually have my own webserver, I could easily host my own videos and pictures, I have enough space and bandwidth and unused domains.

I still purchased a creator account on nostr:npub1nxy4qpqnld6kmpphjykvx2lqwvxmuxluddwjamm4nc29ds3elyzsm5avr7 because I believe they offer a useful service at a good price, and I think rewarding the people who are building the tools on top of the Nostr protocol is needed ( nostr:npub137c5pd8gmhhe0njtsgwjgunc5xjr2vmzvglkgqs5sjeh972gqqxqjak37w👍).

Other free options include nostr:npub1zdr58j526qsrkdjhcg9xs60xfutqeey2ucugms04efnlx3spnmns2eqha9 nostr:npub1zxzmle6ysrvsqa4fujq352hsvclhu5faenyl6qnvxy3ux229z2aslmvwsx and nostrimg.com.

Nostr is awash with choice, or you can build your own! I'm sure a no fee, unlimited, ad-free, privacy respecting video service would be quite popular 😂

I've paid for like 15 relays, 3 of which I still use. Not even mad, cost me a couple daily DCA worth of sats total, and helped devs and relay runners figure out what sort of setup would work for running a good relay. The paid ones that remain are solid( nostr:npub18kzz4lkdtc5n729kvfunxuz287uvu9f64ywhjz43ra482t2y5sks0mx5sz 👍), plus great free options are available now as well!

I think it is important to remember Nostr is a in development beta test of a new free, uncensored, decentralized social media protocol. It is created and maintained by a loose, growing coalition of volunteers & friends. I'll bet the thing that makes Nostr big hasn't even been imagined yet. Copying what already exists, but free, won't be it.

It might be wise to maintain some perspective. You're comparing Nostr to centralized & controlled, decade old social media platforms ran by some of the world's largest corporations. 🤔

Nostrcheck is free and you can upload up to 100mb each file. Also you can upload direct from Amethyst, Plebstr, Nostur, Nostros and Nostrid 💜

On the other hand, I would like to say that maintaining a multimedia server has some costs, I fully understand that nostr.build charges for it.

There is the option to upload any non-text material on a third party site, then use NOSTR to share the link. For example, I use imgbb.com to host my images. There are free file servers available too.

I think a single source being used by the majority, like nostr.build, centralizes NOSTR. It's better that pics, vids, audio, etc be hosted in a distributed way, with each user making the choice of location(s).
