I have no idea of the full context of course, but why not do a basic counter on poor information? All it would take is a "that's not true, look it up". They can do the homework. At minimum they're less likely to just go repeating the idea if made aware that the information is possibly incorrect.

Maybe your friend was referring to the ‘NSA’ who spent the time and money to create SHA-256 and then very generously gave it away for free such that it’s now central to the Bitcoin network (eg: addresses, mining etc).
Has SHA-256 been studied and vetted as much as the Bitcoin code? Is it 100% safe and backdoor proof?
I’m no expert in that field but my understanding is that prior SHAs have been cracked / broken. So I think it’s a valid question.
The FUD never ends does it? Hopefully Satoshi was a man of honor and did not use SHA-256 knowing it had a flaw/backdoor.
