Any builders/maintainers care to share your thoughts on working for friends or family vs your standard customers?

I feel like producing for friends and family is ideal in a way, but it makes the tough conversations that are sometimes needed more difficult.

I finished a small landing+stairs for a lady I have known most of my life. It went pretty smoothly, but the whole time I was fearing some hiccup I’d have to communicate and/or upcharge… which I’ve had to do in the past.

After planning and initial discussion. Make a walk through of expenses (materials and cost of your time) sometimes it helps to have them buy the material based on your material list

Planning is always paramount

Yeah.. I mean I did a full estimate for her, but you know how things can change when you start digging holes, removing old wood, etc. You’re right though, with a full plan usually changes can be understood. Usually haha

Nice job though by the way 🤜

Yeah it's a challenge usually - but if you can cover the costs then labour can be under-charged. Depends on who you're dealing with really.

At the end of the day true business is about relationships -

Good work on those stairs too.

Thank you sir. They step..

you need to put a fat man on those stairs

Haha they’re overbuilt I promise… another thing you do for friends. “Industry standard” def doesn’t cut it

There's toxic f&f and non toxic. i learned the hard way to cut the toxic ones out asap; they tend to want everything for free++ and don't understand boundaries and a bit commie.

Haha I’ve met one or two..

Just be direct and honest with them, as you have been.
