"participation" trophies

I don’t have kids yet, but I can say that I got tremendous value out of them growing up. I played through high school. Additionally, I find that employees that played high level athletics are far more disciplined and hard working than those that did not. True meritocratic competition without all the pomp, circumstance, and virtue signaling that pro sports has become was definitely a net plus in my life.

Thank you, the employee discipline is a great insight. They were net positive for me too. I am running into many families doing equal or more and I just don’t understand it.

They can definitely turn into a God, and ruin you, and your family time as well. All about balance.

It all comes down to the coach. Some will perpetuate a toxic culture, others will foster teamwork and be one of the kids top supporter.

Thanks, I am coaching my 4yo i like this description

Nope

🙋‍♀️ Small town youth sports politics have kept our kid out of it. They also practice and have games going on until 9 or after during the week and that's a deal breaker. Kid's bedtime has only recently gone from 7:30 to 8:30. But "muh sportsball" is such a huge thing here that he feels left out.

I have been wrestling with most of this. My youngest is happy to play, my eldest is a powerhouse but chooses not to go on travel teams cause “that's too much soccer” according to her. So it's a balance they are happy with.

It's so hard to find a balance, glad your kiddos have. Most of the kids I've asked if they're liking it say they wish it was over, lol. The toxic parents are definitely the problem.

Starting day for me is Wednesday, can I just say I wish it was over. I am in too deep & out of my comfort zone (yes I am coaching)

Good luck and my condolences. May the odds be ever in your favor 😂.

I thought about it, but every sports guy around, especially those who reached high levels, told me not to.👀

I don't think that previous to tonight I even questioned what/why of it.

I just suddenly feel like we are racing so my kids can have 2 different play groups

Do they even need that?

I don't think so as long as they have a strong friend group at school
