Anyone out there dealing with in laws and parents buying your children junk off Amazon? How have you handled the presents made of questionable materials?

If I had a kid I would try to keep anything plastic away from them and offer better alternatives. If my kid objected to not being allowed to have something made of plastic and similar materials, I guess I would unfortunately have to restrict them as much as I can, which would unfortunately never be a complete amount without the kid in agreement.

Try to stop it before it comes in, we try to have a list of things we are looking for.

I have used the sentence โ€œwe wanted to get them -item-, but we could also use a -nondanger item-โ€œ

If its inside all i can say is kids misplace toys all the time. Sometimes it ends up under beds in the garage ect

That's a good idea. Grandma got a very thoughtful gift of these wooden vegetables that pop into a wooden garden. But there are misspelled words on the box and I don't trust it to be lead free. My baby chews on everything.

After my second we had to toss the crib once he was out, i ended up sanding the paint off of it so he didnโ€™t eat any more.

Same problem. My second loves the crib paint. Lol

Have you tried a lead test kit? Iโ€™ve used them on several items I wanted to be sure were lead free.

I was going to get one but learned from a chemist who worked in a lab, the at home kits aren't necessary accurate.

I thought about your post quite a bit before answering. Relationships with in-laws can be delicate sometimes and if they have a good relationship, you definitely donโ€™t want to offend the woman who raised your husband.

Iโ€™ve decided that the truth is the best answer.

You to in-laws: Have you read anything about toys from Amazon having lead based paint on them? I love your present and think itโ€™s super cute, but I read this article and it scared me a little. Would you be offended if I put this toy away for a little while? Just until sheโ€™s old enough to stop putting everything in her mouth?

Make sure you have an article cued up on your phone to show them. Listen to their response, and practice feel, felt found.

Yeah, it sucks. So delicate. We have already talked to her about it over the past couple years about the junk and she dismissess our concerns. But I have too talk to her about it again because the cheap shoes she bought my son are giving him blisters and the knock off toy might have lead.... I'm just dreading it. But if I say nothing, I'm letting her walk on me and waste her money.

it comes down to your relationship with your in-laws, I guess. with mine, I would not hesitate to say "hey, I saw the reviews and I don't like this for taro. can you do a return from your Amazon?"

either a return gets initiated and the item is gone from my house, or they know where I stand on XYZ item and why it isn't in our house.
