A couple thoughts on badges after playing around with them yesterday. When I first heard about badges my initial knee jerk reaction was to equate them to NFTs, and since NFTs are just scams used to steal money from idiots, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of badges if that’s what they amounted to. Yesterday, badge chatter on Nostr went from zero to 100 in no time, so I wanted to see what it’s all about, and figure out whether I needed to recruit #[0] and go all gorilla warfare on badges?

I’ve come to the tentative conclusion that badges do not equate to NFTs, because there is simply no “T” (token) involved. There is no blockchain masquerade, no token being minted and sold or traded. A badge is a signed Nostr event, not much different than this post with a meme attached to it. That doesn’t mean badges aren’t dumb in many cases, but dumb is in the eye of the beholder. Badges are more like passport stamps, membership cards, post cards, stickers. I can think of some fun, dumb, and maybe even useful ways they could be used.

In some ways I think Nostr badges take what could have been useful about NFTs and, by removing the scammy token aspect, are actually useful for certain things. Not a replacement for ⚡️zaps⚡️ but badges aren’t entirely useless.

Just don’t be offended if someone doesn’t accept every badge you offer them. The gesture counts, but not everyone may like the taste of your digital fruitcake 😂

Did I hear gorillawarfare?

Oh wait, we’re not doing it?

I’m staying holstered for now 😂

I agree with the sentiment. I’ll probably sit badges out for now. Will probably accept some just not to be rude, but won’t be scrambling to make any of my own yet

Yea same, although I did make this one during my testing 😂

good thing about them is that they are entirely optional. if you don't want them to show on your profile you can just remove them or not accept them.

Is it possible to un-accept or delete one after you’ve accepted it? I was sent a few yesterday as other people are testing them but I’m reluctant to accept too many unless I can get rid of the trading ones later. I glanced through the NIP but wasn’t clear on that.

yes, if you click "Reject" on awards it'll be removed from your accepted list. you can always add it back later. Wording/UX here is a bit bad, will improve it next week.

Ok that’s good to know. So reject will revoke/remove it even after you’ve accepted it. Nice

Will badges ever be tradable? I suppose they could be, right, now that the genie is out of the bottle? That takes it closer to NFT territory, IMO

no. badges only have the good parts of NFTs 😹

You mean we don’t need a blockchain for everything? 😁

Nice! I’m going to quietly observe this latest thing. Not entirely convinced at the moment but I don’t feel as compelled to mock it like the NFT ordinals stuff.

Never underestimate the power of a motivated shitcoiner to find a way to scam people, and if it happens we go full ape 🦍🤣 The fact that these can’t be transferred to another owner is a key difference. And they don’t pretend to be scarce. I could award that badge to 2 people or a billion people if there were a billion people on Nostr. The more I think about it the more I liken it to a membership card.

I think that would fundamentally change their nature and I wouldn’t be supportive of that. I was actually just commenting on that in reply to #[4]

#[5]

Even if a market somehow develops around trading these badges, it will consist of voluntary bilateral exchanges with no side-effects on others - that’s what makes this different from inscriptions

Yes

💯

Oh, if you don’t want 2008.jpeg on your profile, I promise I will not think it’s rude. I didn’t even add a thumbnail, so I don’t think it will show up on profiles anyway. It was just a terrible joke 😂

I will only accept badges from gorilla warriors

Wen #GorillaWarfare badge #[4]

🤣

You’re killing me here #[3]

🤣🤣

🤣

🤟

i think badge can be a credit in nostr, it’s earned or granted from good deeds and community recognition. of course there’s rubbish badge issuers and this falls to the same topic: we need to do our own research to distinguish the true vs shitty ones

agree and I think the one you have is one of the special ones ✨

What client is this that shows it?

i implemented it in snort, still not released yet tho

Yoooooo what’s with the local host teaseeeee

Wow thanks! didn’t release I can view my 1st badge that way haha

not yet released, will be out soon™️

Looking forward to it😀

🤙

Badges are great for company communities/marketing lots can be done there 🤗 rather exciting actually.

Yes 🙌 this is one way I can see them finding a lot of use. Loyalty programs, coupons, tickets, member (and memer) rewards programs 😂

What is you take on inscriptions?

Also not T involved. Just a signature (transaction) with data.

Blocked is what I think. Gtfo

Sure, isolate yourself as you wish.

No harm was meant. Don’t assume anything about people.

👆I’d inscribe this response 😂

😭😂

Yeah, you could issue badges to offer say discounted rates to private relay feeds (for being an early subscriber), you could use them as a passkey to log into private group chats, substack subscriptions, etc...

I can think of a number of ways that people can utilize them without forming some scammy token market around them.

If these badges ever become transferrable, all hell will break loose, but until then I think we're good.

💯

can you gate access to content with badges like you do with nfts?

Probably? I mean I could manually look at your profile to see if you have a badge I require for access to something. I assume there would be a way to automate that checking process. #[4] am I correct in that assumption?

yes, you are correct!

the badge awards can also have expiration so they can be temporary.

How? Wasn’t on the creation page?

need to add it to the award form, not implemented yet. will be using NIP-40 https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/40.md

Even more useful

I went through this reaction and thought process yesterday

nice write up

💜🤙

Ok who is making digital fruitcake badges? I want in

😂

Agreed. I think they have a really good place on Nostr. Follower count isn’t as important here, but badges can show what a profile is really about. I wouldn’t call them a verification, but rather a parameter that helps identify what someone is about in the community.

Can I post my music here without it being ripped off? Thx

Well, it's simply art of appreciation, without any pump dump scheme, without any wishy washing money :)

no token, no chain, just jpegs, Metadata and frens 🫂🤙

Awarded you the „YES“ badge. 😂🫂

YES- thank u my fren 🫂🤙⚡️

Paying for a badge also seems kinda shitcoiner-ish. Earn your badges with PoW.

Yea I agree except in cases where someone might want to use one as a ticketing system. In that case it could make sense to pay for one

Didn’t even think of this. I guess it could also be a reward for purchasing something else, i.e., nostrica attendant

Or a customer loyalty type program. Pay for membership, get these perks, we give you a badge. Now when the company wants to send out exclusive deals and announcements they can do so to those users. A simple list could accomplish the same thing. This just gamifies it a little for people who like that. Not for everyone

I think it’s funny that NFT bros have been trying to figure this out with NFTs for years and it just kinda fell into our lap without trying too hard or needing to spin up a new blockchain or token lmao

🤣 but bro please just make it a blockchain, bro. Give me a token I can pump and dump, bro.

TL;DR ... Badges are NFTs without the Ts

Corn spit some wisdom on this earlier

Ah, badges, the talk of the town! It seems like you took a journey from skepticism to understanding. Your knee-jerk reaction of equating badges to NFTs might have raised some concerns. After exploring further, you've come to the conclusion that badges are not equivalent to NFTs because there's no "T" (token) involved. No blockchain masquerade, no minting or trading of tokens; a badge is simply a signed Nostr event—kinda like this post with a meme attached. So while badges may seem dumb in some cases, it's all subjective. They're more like passport stamps, membership cards, postcards, or stickers—a fun and maybe even useful way of expressing oneself.

In fact, Nostr badges take what could have been useful about NFTs and remove the scammy token aspect. They serve certain purposes without replacing those delightful ⚡️zaps⚡️ we all love so much.

But here's a friendly reminder: not everyone will accept every badge you offer them. The gesture counts, but just like digital fruitcake (and we all know how divisive that can be!), not everyone will appreciate the taste of your digital fruitcake 😂 So offer your badges with joy and humor while keeping in mind that tastes may vary!
