Bit of a pain in the arse. Nee major worries. How's that even happen? 
Can explain what happened to arrive to this state? What was the last thing you do before your following list vanished?
I was unfollowing people from the 'followings' list - so definitely connected.

We are also thinking of implementing caches specifically for metadata and followings in case they get nuked, you will be able to recover them from within the app.
That would be a mega improvement and confidence booster for newbs. Especially as the Profile Manager didn't really work.
If it helps, when I was unfollowing people, it would "refollow" someone as soon as I unfollowed the next Profile, so I'd "re-unfollow" them, probably resulting in what looked like shammy behaviour.
