I am not using payed relays (only standard relays on iris and amethyst), should I and how does that work?

Hard to make recommendations because we don't have a lot of differentiation yet. nostr.wine is one of the few with some added features (the filter relay).

Have you checked your DMs? Nostr.wine sent a DM when I added the relay with an invoice. worked great for me.
same for me. and when nostr.eden.land is the only one i activate, my global feed is empty. using ios.
I don't know what kind of filtering Damus does. Can assure you that eden global feed is not empty.

Should you disconnect the free relays once you have linked to a paid one?
I’m also trying to figure out the benefits of paid relays. If they reduce the garbage on the global feed that would be a benefit.
Also considering running my own relay on Umbrel or Embassy
Have you considered that payed relays are potential censoring hubs?
They will add filters which are whatever they want those filters to be by ideology, etc.... So... Twitter again... I keep reading messages about it and I can't understand how absurd is this line of thought...
If you prefer to have more control and add your own filters, I will suggest you create your own relay and your own filters and other features that relay may offer, if you have Umbrel or Start9 they come already with a relay you can install and run in under a minute.

That is a possible feature right? Those that are not saffy enough, or don't want to invest the time, can pay a few sata for tailored relays with filters they'd like.
Yes, and at this stage I am starting to believe it will be the norm, as with #Bitcoin and centralized exchanges... Not pretty
But, when I go to see some of the profiles of the people saying they are getting a paid relay, they have in their profile dozens of other relays, which is amusing, if you are going to use paying relays because of their filters using them mixed with other relays makes it useless since you will get all the ads and spam from the other relays you are using.
Installing an #Bitcoin node like umbrel requires very little effort and comes with a private Nostr relay you can install, and for the people not technical savvy at all, they can buy a Star9 out of the box ready, and install NOSTR aswelll, there are options, some cheaper than others but being uncensorable and your data unconfiscatable is priceless, specially if you are a content creator
Avoid censorship and profiling, use public relays and use your own, if you are running a node and you have LN channels configured, for sure you are savvy enough to run your own relay and add any filters you want
And after that, if you keep using 18 relays you will not notice any difference, you need to delete all the relays and use only the ones you configured yourself
