Watched Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch. It’s a sci fi movie where we follow Paul Atreides who navigates a perilous universe where noble houses try to get control of the desert planet Dune (Arrakis), the only source of spice. Themes of power, religion and ecology are very present. Didn’t enjoy this one as much. 3 hour long. Some parts are very boring. I feel like a lot of story was crammed into this. Lots of jumps in time. On the positive side, the costumes were amazing and the action scenes were well made. 5/10 #nodereviews

I made it 30 minutes and I love Lynch and Kyle MacLachlan. It’s that bad.

Yeah. Really long and boring

💯 you took one for the team

I did 🤣🤣🫡

You get to indulge in a good movie now

If only I knew in advance whether they were good or not 😂😂

I tried the first two of Lynch (eraserhead and elephant man). I couldn’t get past 20mins.

It’s funny, I think you get a glimpse of old Lynch in the 2nd/more recent Twin Peaks, where there is this long, extraneous, boring part. But it’s art. So you gotta experience it.

In the early days, I think he tried to give experience and failed, it was just long and drawn out.

Looking forward to that. Only saw parts of twin peaks

Catch up!

You recommend it?

Twin Peaks is the best tv of all time and nostr:npub1eequz6v23szzyx9utphsh8kg6kll50wte6sfh4vah8gdjtplcz6qg7at9s will back me on this

Best tv of all time? 🤭

Sopranos got nothing on Twin Peaks

Damn skippy.

Bold claim. Haven’t seen twin peaks yet. I’ll let you know what I think once I do. I do have a bias for Sopranos though

What’s Twin Peaks? Is that a brewery?

🤣

You’re absolutely kicked off our island 🏝️

Only if you put two of them side by side.

Mever watched that film. Guess i did not miss anything.

Exactly

Tried the other day. Ive still got almost half to go.

Maybe i shouldn't have started the extended version. It's kind if painful to get through

I know Lynch is a genius but his early stuff is so boring. Tried his first two as well. Couldn’t get past 20mins for each

How are you consuming movies

A few months ago I went on a terror and downloaded 15 tb of flicks and shows.

Truenas server with Jellyfin installed on it. I have Jellyfin player installed on the TV. Stream for the server

Seems this is the way. May hit you up for a question when i set up in my new place.

Of course

🤝

It's better than a 5/10! Or maybe I'm biased about this particular book.

There was some funny sitcom (parebthood or arrested development maybe?) where two guys became obsessed with trying to make a worthy Dune stage play, and of course it turned out horrible lol

Nah. I’m being generous with a 5 since it’s David Lynch. Maybe a 4 honestly. Could have shortened it to 100mins. It would probably still have sucked

It's a tough book to make a screenplay from. I was pretty young when I decided it was awesome, so that may be playing a part

Denis Villeneuve’s strategy was smarter. Split it up in multiple movies.

There was a 6 part SciFi Channel series in 2000 that I liked a lot. Long episodes too, and basically the book verbatim iirc.

Nobody else seems to have seen it other than me though :/

What’s it called? Which director?

John Harrison... lol? Looks like he was executive producer on recent blockbusters, so he has that going for him

OMG love #Dune. I read the book at least once a year and pick up new things every time. The audiobook rendition of Dune is fantastic too!

Hello! Nice to know another fellow gentleman of such refined taste!

I read first book pretty young, came back and read it again plus the remaining 5 books years later. Just reread all 6 last year on audiobook!

I track all my reading here ➝ https://briangreen.net/reading

Thanks for sharing. Reminds me I wanna read neuromancer soon.

Hyperion, dune books, snowcrash, and midnight (lol) are only ones I've read from a quick scan of the list.

I'm assuming you've read dune beforehand?

I have not. But reading the book or not doesn’t change the fact that the movie was boring

No, but it puts it in context.

The parts of the movie that are boring are intentionally so in the book.

I understand what you’re saying but that’s not making the movie any better.

I'm not defending the film. It's bad.

I prefer Denis Villeneuve’s approach

Agreed. It does badly abbreviate much of Herbert's work and intention, though.

More of an essential cliff notes version.

Still, Eminently more entertaining and watchable.

That’s always what I wonder: does a movie adaptation need to be the exact rendition of the book to be a solid entertainment. I guess it depends on the book

Not specifically.

There are plenty of entertaining adaptions that are complete departures from the originator's intent, stylistic choices, etc

That said, what is "entertaining" is every bit as subjective as the definition of art.

Agreed

I also think that harder books to convert to film profit from a complete departure rather than trying to be as close as possible to the story

Warhammer nym/pfp? 👀

Yes

Guess I knew but had to make sure. Cool! I only looked into game/lore fairly recently, and just part time here and there, bot sure why...just draws me in a bit I guess. Painted a few models and got a few more coming. Never played and haven't read rules all the way yet.

Welcome! It's a big strange place.

(Somewhat ironically- all on the borrowed backdrop of Frank Herbert's creation)

It's something that really encompasses the term "hobby".

What minis have you collected/factions you like?

Only got 4 Custodes so far. Mostly done painting but paused before doing finishing touches for some reason (couple months back), then got pulled in by Black Templars recently for some reason and decided to order a slew of them. Reminds me, they should be arriving any day.

What you like? Mechanicus I assume...i liked their general lore a lot (reminded me of the guild from dune lol), but decided they looked like the hardest to assemble so steered clear for time being

Ad mech certainly. Hardest to paint and assemble well IMHO. (Some chaos factions are about equal)

Lore is some of the most fun. A lot of inter faction disagreement and struggle.

Checked if packages delivered after talking to you, and 2 of 3 were. Huzzah!

Excellent!

Now you can field what should be a heretical chapter that isn't.

I want a Starship Troopers review soon

The first movie was good!

I only watched the first one. Haven't seen the rest. Didn't even know there were, until now 😂

The following ones aren’t as good

Satirical.

It was an entire repudiation of Heinlein's original intent in the book. (For justifiable reasons)

Isn’t that what makes it so good though? The fact that it’s satire

Exactly.

If you've seen 3-hour version then you saw 1995 (I think then) extended version not done by David Lynch (and thus credited to Allen M. Smithee before he was decommissioned). In the beginning there is a summary introduction with static images or Princess Irilan speaking?
