What is the optimal number of relays to run for the average user?
Discussion
10-20
Seems like so many. Why?
The more relays the more people you will meet but uses higher resources
I'm at ~24, usually some have issues connecting, so I'm left with ~22. But I tried at 11 and it was good but seemed like I was missing data, and I was, having more relays seems to allow you to pull more data or see more data maybe, I'm not sure. Probably stuff they're working on improving. One of the relays I'm on aggregates 10 other relays, those will probably be more popular too, connect to 10 but have connectivity of 100 maybe
12-15 in my experience
How do you add good ones? Just snag them from knowledgeable people?
A couple of the biggest ones that you don't let feed to your global feed. A handful of relays that are paid/bitcoiner ones that have good signal. I've noticed in Amethyst that my connection type changes which relays feed me the most (cell vs wifi vs +vpn). I've tested with two identical setups on different connections. It will all get easier.
I can't believe how fast things develop here. Psyched to see where this goes
You don’t need a lot. I have way too many. You need some paid relays though. Your notes don’t show up on global when I filter to only paid relays.
If I have 1 paid am I good then? Seems like global feed is short term in it's current form
nostr.🍷 is really good and does rebroadcasting to othe public relays, as well as pull and filter spam out 🐶🐾⚡️
You should be okay with one paid relay, but I would grab some while they’re extremely cheap right now. In Damus, I filter my global feed to only show paid relays, so there is practically zero spam. Makes the experience much better, and you can always turn on a free relay if you want to dig for newcomers.
I bet they go down in Sats price.
Competition will increase
Possibly, but they might increase because spammers won’t mind paying a few sats to spam the global feed. Eventually, they will probably charge a few sats per note you post.
I doubt that business model would gain traction. People like free once paid for. Subscription, maybe.
Spam is def set to increase
Yes, it just depends on how the spam moves. There will be many different relay options. Some will be pay-once, others will be per-sat, and some will be free. They may even find other ways to monetize. What you choose will depend on what experience you hope to have.
For now though, definitely grab a paid relay so we can see your notes in global 😂
Which relay or relays do you suggest? 🤔
Do you mean choosing your relays by “filter”?
I don't know what that means
In Damus you choose which relays show on your global feed, so a lot people have it filtered to only their paid relays on global
I have several relays that I’m connected to, so when I post a note, everyone on those relays see the note.
On Damus, in the global feed, you can choose to filter the relays that you see. So you’re still posting to all the relays you’re connected to, but in global you’re only seeing notes on the relays you want to see.
