I use this older Pixel 3 as a book reader.
It doesn't have any apps, just Moon+ for books and Obsidian for notes (synced across my devices) - so the only two items that it has is "books" and "notes"...

I spent 40GBP on a book yesterday that I could have downloaded a PDF of. Books all the way📚🤙🏻.
Not when you are traveling or living a nomad life... printed books are either not available or you can carry only one/couple.
Fair enough, but isn't part of the benefit of traveling and/or living nomadically to minimize you burdens, both physically and psychologically? I'd argue there's some upside to only having one or two books at a time.
Interesting topic! I’ve been thinking about the best solution for my bike tours. My current setup: one physical book for the joy of reading powered by the sun and an old tablet for carrying a complete library of interesting stuff to read at night (while using it as some sort of flashlight)
I think both of you have a point and there is a value in minimalism, but for me I enjoy the combination of having really portable way to read books without distraction and at the same time having a feeling that I have a nice library of books that I own, I can always look at and I can always check remember the books I read and check through books to read next.

If you set the phone for Night Light (to disable blue light), reduce the brightness to minimum, and set white text on black background, then it's fairly easy to read in full dark (on OLED displays).
That's a nice feeling indeed my friend ! I've satisfied that need by having a digital copy of every book I have appreciated over time in a "Library" folder, and the physical books themselves on a shelf back home, to delight my eyes twice a year when I return to base camp! The really important thing is to keep reading good authors, learning, sharing & appreciating art!
