In your opinion, what should we call cryptocurrencies that aren’t Bitcoin? (inb4 shitcoin)

In my own writing, I use “crypto-offspring”. It denotes that BTC was the origin of this phenomenon while remaining neutral on any other protocol or token.

I used to use “altcoin” but even that seems to elevate too many of the scam projects, while leaving objectively interesting and valuable projects like Monero in the same category.

Andreas Antonopoulos uses “open blockchains” which I kind of like too, but it’s fairly broad

Shitcoin is very accurate and descriptive. No need to deviate.

things are shitty because of reasons

that shouldn't be controversial.

My conversion to bitcoin maxi began when I first heard Saifedean unapologetically say "shitcoin" in his dulcit Lebanese American accent.

Shitcoin

Monero isnt a shitcoin by any metric.

theres probably one or two others too idk

By every metric in fact—It's trending towards zero agains't bitcoin, has infinite total supply, you can't audit the current supply, bad reputation, getting delisted everywhere, has an awful name, logo and fanbase (mostly criminals and users with anime girls profile pictures), regular hardforks, and so on... Trump memecoin had more marketcap on day one than monero. The only good thing about Monero is that it's privacy-focused and PoW.

aside from your trivial, stupid and inaccurate objections to the name and users of #monero

the simple fact Trumps memecoin became so expensive so quickly shows that market cap mostly indicates *speculative interest by cantillionaires*

Unfortunately being on a fiat standard means the fiat price of these things has little to do with their Value.

this is why delistings are gud aktualy. Moneristas want *people to use the tools.* not just play around with them. delistings encourage the education of users who actually NEED the properties of the asset to aquire and use it in a sovereign way.

CEXs are rent seekers.

a tail emission is NOT "Infinite supply." at any given point in time you know EXACTLY how much monero is in circulation. how is that infinite?

it's correct to say "as time approaches infinity, supply also approaches infinity."

and that's a mathematical abstract that has fuck all to do with the real world.

when was the last time you audited the bitcoin supply? right. never.

you're ALREADY trusting cryptographic primitives you dont understand.

it is true moneros supply guarantees depends on different cryptography than is used in Bitcoin. but it is old and well established and its irrational to say you'll trust what's implemented in Bitcoin but not what's implemented in Monero.

And since you bring it up, here's a pod on that very subject that nostr:npub1lqvv69u549atefvcyfht30lemlyvl9jnz4l7c6ejs20yzpq7hh7sjjfx0r dropped a few hours ago.

I respect your energy defending the unpopular

there are DOZENS of us!

DOZENS! 😂

(no but fr, moneros a whole damn community of cypherpunks, nerds and anarchists.)

its been this way since before there was an Internet.

Definitely the only alt coin I may someday spend some amount of time trying to get a better understanding of. If only to learn more about the different crypto choices/tradeoffs made.

Its valuable to do the learning part even if you end up deciding its not something you want to be involved with 👍

Yup, just have to be selective with where I spend my focus. Already a ton of stuff on the docket, but recently learned what ring signatures are (in a BTC context) so maybe it won’t be too big a lift.

I know the feeling lol

theres so much to do!

So much potatoes to roast, so little thyme! 🥁 🥁

Too long, didn't read

you dont have any reading comprehension ability anyway

It could be worth understanding the subject you want to comment on. nostr:npub1tr4dstaptd2sp98h7hlysp8qle6mw7wmauhfkgz3rmxdd8ndprusnw2y5g and me go into detail on this subject in case you want to learn. Hope it’s useful.

Seth is a privacy-washing Twitter shitcoiner. HFSP.

The best way to cover up being low IQ and wrong is to attack someone else. Seth is a solid bloke with very reasonable takes.

Monero users bootlicking Seth are just as bad as Bitcoiners bootlicking Saylor.

There isnt any reasonable comparison between Seth and Saylor.

One is technically knowledgeable and an educator about nuanced tradeoffs.

The other is a billionaire investor and fiat maxi.

We're all anxiously waiting for you to learn the difference.

Thanks for sharing. Hope it’s helpful.

I think after the last one with Seth I left a note asking for stuff like this.

Great to have it all together.

Love what you're doing 🙏

Very happy to hear you enjoy it mate. Thanks for the support.

WILL MONERO GET ME LAID? That's the only relevant question

😂 💯

I didn’t read any of that but i gave you a like the same way I smile at retarded people when they make eye contact with me.

Be blessed!

🧡🍻👊🏻

BTC sessions auditing supply of BTC today!

oh yeah? on YouTube or what?

details plz.

will watch! thanks 🙏

If I had caught win of Trump coin early I would have thrown modest money in and watched closely for when to exit as it pumped and dumped. It is not only cantillionaires that play but hundreds of thousands of small speculators.

not a good idea.

but its true that small speculators play a role. probably looked at all together it's a significant one.

Congrats to the most retarded note today🤝

Thank you sir

The only way to avoid value judgment on the matter is to describe the two as "bitcoin" and "not bitcoin."

There's also no separate name for "square wheels" besides square wheels for a reason.

How about "delusions"?

I do sympathise with Monero a lot more than other shit because at least they actually had a use case from the start.

You inb4'd the right answer. They are fiat instruments that use features of Bitcoin without the ethos of Bitcoin.

“Digital assets”

💀

I’m gettin’ burned here

because its not the right framing.

theyre absolutely correct that 99.9% of "cryptocurrencies" are garbage.

and therefore shitcoins.

but theyre shitcoins because of real reasons.

and not because they are simply not Bitcoin.

so when they lump a Monero in with "shitcoins*

its because of they're religious believers, not serious thinkers.

or they're just ignorant and don't care.

but it sorta begs the question,

besides Bitcoin and Monero

what chain is NOT a shitcoin?

because afaict theres those two,

and a whole lotta bullshit.

Some shitcoins are shittier than others, like memecoins and Proof of Stake shitchains. Monero may not be as shit as the rest, but it's still a shitcoin.

In good reality, "crypto" has its original Latin meaning in "to hide" or later as "encrypted".

When any given type of digital coins can't be kept private from others, then they shouldn't be called crypto currency.

And then we come into the other important distinguishing characteristic for a cryptocurrency: mining.

Mining has the goal of a fair distribution to as many users as possible to keep the network unbiased and fair. When a digital coin claims to be mined but then in practice only chinese farms instead of home users can mine it, that is effectively not a crypto currency either, it something elitist that isn't reachable for normal people.

Then there is the word "coin".

Which relates to using the virtual object as someone would use coins to buy things and pay to others. Some of those "coins" claim to be "store of value" which is an abomination when you think about the goal of using coins. A crypto coin worthy of that name needs to be used on the real world. Buy stuff, keep it, but use it several times a year. Most of the folks here talk about crypto coins all week long and never actually buy stuff with it.

Last but not least is religion. Technology is not religion. It is sad to see religious ignorance taking place instead of the technological power that created these things in the first place.

There is one coin that deserves to be truly called a cryptocurrency, a coin coin that governments will never support but that is always there to support you, the people. One day everyone here will understand why.

They're doomed to failure by virtue of not being Bitcoin. We already had the zero to one moment, not when Bitcoin was first released by Satoshi, but when Bitcoin grew beyond state capture without the guiding hand of 'founders, stakeholders, and investors'.

That will never be replicated, mainly because we now live in a world where Bitcoin exists.

Every project begins, by definition, as not Bitcoin. The slow grind to failure is merely a symptom of that fact.

the statement "Bitcoin has grown beyond state capture"

is a statement of faith.

It remains to be seen if it is true or not.

Even nocoiners know what shitcoins are now. I think it's a done deal.

Cryptofiat

Copycats? (Not really, since they brag about what's different) Small coins? (Still excludes eth, though it's getting there) Subject coins? (relative King Bitcoin, far-fetched for people who haven't heard that expression)

Hard to come up with a good name, I don't even think shitcoin is a good name as it doesn't differentiate between the outright scams and the well-intentioned projects. IMO, the latter is still unlikely to have a large adoption or value compared to BTC due to first-mover advantage and network effect, but there's a difference between trying to make money better even though not successful and to scam people.

#Shitcoin. There is no second best.

#₿ #bicoin #bitcoinonly

"Useless" is the right and respectful description.. and literally correct ..

Because only use of Blockchain is store value .. the solution was custom built for money ... #bitcoin

If you use it for anything else it is like using a starship rocket for going to office !

Besides - all other usecase ( etmg contracts , stables, memes ) are better , cheaper and faster on legacy tech .. an #Oracle database running on #Redhat anywhere ..

Just because space suit is a better technology doesn't mean one should wear it on equator :-)

LARP Coins.

Or if I'm among futurist types, then 'Bitcoin is sixth wave but your coin is a regression to fifth wave and doomed to failure.'

Or 'ypur coin is Bitcoin reinvented for a fiat paradigm'... which is, ironically, an encouraging compliment because they don't know any better.

But LARP Coin is more punchy and likely to provoke discussion.
