Real talk: is my nostr handle lame? I did not put much thought into it and maybe it's off-putting. Sometimes my humor does not come across like I think it will..
Anyway, just thinking about changing it but I'd probably pick something even worse π

I don't get it. However it's better than the 50,000 Bitcoin themed names here.
it was sort of a play on words, ie. cannon fodder - "is an informal, derogatory term for combatants who are regarded or treated by government or military command as expendable".
So I was working on clouds when they first came out (AWS 2006) feeling so beat up way back in the day there was no automation for any of it, so I wrote things like mysql snapshots and disaster recovery and all this stuff.. only to have Amazon use the company I worked for as a product roadmap and crush our business into oblivion. We then spent lots of time doing the same thing with other clouds like rackspace, openstack, and a ton of other clouds that nobody has ever heard of because they also got crushed.
So, that's the backstory for cloud fodder. I set it as my Twitter handle many years ago and then never used Twitter.. Got churned up and spit out by the clouds. ππ£
That's a proper username. Having a story behind it makes it more meaningful. It doesn't matter if people don't get it.
I have a story for my username. I kind of stole it from my older brother. He and a friend had this idea to sell energy drinks on college campus on foot from their backpacks as a sort of guerilla sales technique. They also talked a lot about branding and they wanted to create a slang word for energy drinks, "crizzo". They were going to call their business King Crizzo and I wanted to help with brand awareness by adopting it as my username.
Of course the idea never actually went beyond talking about it, but I kept the username anyway. Eventually I dropped the King part because people would call me King for short instead of Crizzo, which I didn't like.
Haha nice!
I'm not sure why mine gets mangled into all alphabet, maybe I made it that way first but it's written with a zero and one... and always gets mis-transcribed, which was the whole point of making this handle
l0k1
I first adopted the handle "elfspice" back in the days of DMT-World, stolen from the slang name of DMT. I later ended up hanging out on Spiritplants IRC, and a more senior member of the chat, who everyone fawned over, was called "Elfstone" and people started bitching at me because they had to type 5 characters to auto-type his name instead of mine, which due to P being before T was picked out first by xchat.
So I changed to loki. Then someone was bitching about it colliding with some other name, idk, I can't remember what, so I changed it to l0k1.
This ended the name collision problem and the handle stuck, and I found it endlessly amusing that people couldn't read it correctly. It's practically a demonstration of why Base58 and Bech32 have only one each from Il1 and 0Oo.
I've even got a domain now, l0k1.cc
Nobody bothers to manually type these things any more so the transcription thing isn't a problem anymore.
But I still do kinda wish that fonts without distinctive Il1 and o0O would be lost from the internet, anyhow. Come to that, I often dream about people using more sensible, less ambiguous alphabets, but that's about as likely to happen as everyone learning to speak esperanto, which I by the way I think is a lame language. So, whatever.
Mangling language is part of language.

I love these handle stories!! Nice.
Yeah, I wanted to share after reading yours. I kinda guessed that it may have had something to do with amazon. All those big megacorps do it. I remember poor programmers trying to write extensions for MacOS back in the day and next version Apple would build the same feature into the system and the extension writer was out of an income source.
For sure, in the Amazon case, I still think it's neat to provision servers instantly and pay by the hour, but it's also very expensive now.. typical start cheap, and then get greedy strategys lol. I'm glad that I'm good at data centers too, I can always just rack em and stack em if I want, and build all that fancy automation from scratch on any set of servers. Openstack was pretty cool, and kubernetes is the ultimate..
I think Amazon even offered to buy the company I was working at, but they didn't want to sell and made their play for 'multi-cloud', so it wasn't completely big bad amzn afaik. Apple on the other hand, ya ouch. Getting booted from the platform like that is just wrong.
There's a lot of things that are wrong, but the main one is that the only winning strategy in business is to have mates in the banks and parliament, and that ultimately leads to bad things for everyone because it's them against us.
I've given up on hoping we can fix it. Just focusing on surviving and praying for the aliens to come and whoop some psychopathic asses to smithereens.
Ya, I always thought the Internet would help make good changes.. but something went wrong. Imagine how much easier it is for aliens now with smart phones π
I don't think the smartphones have any impact on the aliens.
We are just in a phase like the olden days of mainframes and dumb terminals. This led to the personal computer and the floppy disk.
Witness π
You put more effort than I did. I would trade you.
I like it, though Iβm not sure exactly what it means
I laughed when I first saw it. Its a decent handle.
I like anything poetic or ironic. Or absurd. All three make me laugh.
If you can identify with that handle then it's your handle. Don't worry about what other people "think" in their narrow mind. I keep getting associated with an online dating platform for gays. It was even worse when it was still CyberGrinder instead of just TheGrinder. Apparently that name suggested that I had a thing for stalking minors online. Go figure.
I grind, it's what I do. Sats, games, online, IRL. Maybe I should change my name to TheHustler but then people will associated the name with a porn magazine.
Good point. TheGrinder made sense to me, I do watch twitch at times (and now zap stream) π
Been a while since I could grind. My ping is not so good because it's starlink and I usually only get interested in games where ping is important. Last major game addiction was rocket League. I guess now I just grind on programming π
